FM-1 firmware · V15

Stock V15

This is the firmware the FM-1 ships with: a 6-operator FM synth with 32 algorithms that reads standard DX7 voice banks, 128 voices in four banks, six effects you can reorder, a 7-mode arpeggiator and a 16-step sequencer with 16 patterns. It's closed source, so everything below comes from M-VAVE's docs and product photo, not from code.

Start here

How the panel thinks

  • One mode at a time. FX, ENV, LFO, EDIT, GLO, ARP and SEQ each open their own screen. Most close again with a second press, or with HOME.
  • SELECT turns pages inside a mode. The bottom bar shows which page you're on (for example 1/2 LFO).
  • KNOB 1-4 always edit the four values shown along the bottom of the screen.
  • ARP and SEQ can't run together. Switch one off before the other.
  • Hold SAVE to keep your changes. Nothing is saved until you do.

Play and pick sounds

Do thisWhat happens
Turn PRESETSLoad voice 001-128 straight away. A list pops up for a second. (Not while SEQ is on: each pattern has its own voice.)
Turn ALGORITHMPick algorithm 1-32; a diagram shows how the six operators connect.
OCT- / OCT+Octave down or up, up to 3 each way.
Hold OCT-, turn ALGORITHMTranspose down, up to 12 semitones. Hold OCT+ to go up.
OCT- and OCT+ togetherOctave and transpose back to 0.
MASTERVolume.
Hold HOMEBluetooth MIDI on or off.

Sequencer

Do thisWhat happens
SEQSequencer on (press again for off). The key lights show the 16 steps.
RECRecord: each note you play fills the next step. REC again stops recording.
PLAY/STOPStart or stop the pattern. (Only with SEQ on.)
Hold a note and turn SELECTWhile recording, stretch the note over several steps.
Hold REC and turn SELECTMove between steps; hold keys to add or replace notes, or leave a step empty for a rest.
Page 1KNOB 1 pattern 1-16, KNOB 2 clear, KNOB 3 how many patterns chain, KNOB 4 steps in the loop.
Page 2KNOB 1 the pattern's voice, KNOB 2 rate, KNOB 3 tempo, KNOB 4 gate.
Page 3KNOB 1 swing, KNOB 2 follow external MIDI clock, KNOB 3 transpose ±24.

Switching from your firmware

Pick the firmware on your FM-1 now to see what installing Stock V15 does to its data.

1 · Back up first, on SLOOP

  • Back up first. In SLOOP’s USB editor, open Song & sections, then Backup and Save a backup. The SLOOP-backup-<date>.json file holds the working loop, sections A–D and their order, 32 user sounds, the FM6 bank, SYN kits, samples USR1–USR4, the settings (including QUANT and MIDI 3) and a stored custom theme. It omits the device favourite list, browser library, browser scenes and playlist, undo, sounding notes and live drum mutes. Restore asks once in the browser and needs playback stopped; it writes the included objects, with one MIDI exception: a backup from 2.5.1 or later without MIDI object 10 resets MIDI LEARN, track and drum channels, OTHER, BEND and MIDI 3 to defaults. A file without a theme does not erase an existing theme. For a 2.7.1 backup restored onto 2.6, use the 2.7.1 editor: it skips a custom theme the 2.6 unit cannot accept; the 2.6 editor rejects a file containing that theme. Export this song makes a smaller .sloopsong file containing only the loop, sections and order; it cannot replace a full backup before changing firmware.

2 · What happens to your SLOOP data

Possibly at risk

(the layout is reported or inferred, not read in code)

  • song section A (a whole project)
  • song section B (a whole project)
  • song section C (a whole project)
  • song section D (a whole project)
  • the music in progress (autosave)
  • user sample slot USR1 (header at 0xA0000)
  • user sample slot USR2 (header at 0xB4000)
  • user sample slot USR3 (header at 0xC8000)
  • user sounds U01-U16
  • user sounds U17-U32

Shape a sound

Do thisWhat happens
ENVSwitches the amp envelope on (it's off by default): KNOB 1-4 attack, decay, sustain, release, 0-100%. Press ENV again to switch it off.
LFOPage 1: wave, speed, pitch depth, volume depth. Page 2: delay, pitch sensitivity, restart on each note, oscillator restart.
EDIT, then a labelled black keyEdit the voice in depth. The black keys pick what: F#3-F#4 = OP1-OP6, G#4 = PIT (pitch envelope), A#4 = GLO (voice-wide settings), C#5 = MONO, D#5 = POLY.
EDIT, an OP key, turn SELECTSix pages per operator: tuning and level; envelope rates; envelope levels; sensitivity and ratio/fixed; key scaling depth and break point; key scaling curves and rate scaling.
EDIT, hold an OP keyMutes that operator until you change voice.
EDIT, A#4 (GLO key)Page 1: algorithm, feedback, oscillator sync, voice transpose. Page 2: turn KNOB 1 right to reset the voice, KNOB 2 right to rename it, KNOB 3 right to copy another voice over it.

Careful: the GLO key (A#4, in EDIT) edits the voice; the GLO button opens the global settings.

Effects

Do thisWhat happens
FXSix effect slots in a grid: filter, reverb, delay, distortion, chorus, phaser. Bright = on.
Turn SELECTMove between slots.
KNOB 1-3The selected effect's values. On the filter and reverb, KNOB 1 picks the type (low-pass, band-pass, high-pass; room, hall, plate).
KNOB 4Right turns the effect on, left turns it off.
SEL, turn SELECT, SELGrab the selected effect, move it along the chain, drop it. The SEL light is on while you hold it.

Arpeggiator

Do thisWhat happens
ARPArpeggiator on (press again for off). Hold keys and it plays them.
Page 1KNOB 1 mode (up, down, inclusive, exclusive, random, order, repeat), KNOB 2 octaves 1-4, KNOB 3 rate, KNOB 4 tempo 30-300.
Page 2KNOB 1 gate, KNOB 2 swing, KNOB 3 latch (keeps playing after you let go), KNOB 4 follow external MIDI clock.

Settings and saving

Do thisWhat happens
GLO button, page 1KNOB 1 MIDI channel (ALL or 1-16), KNOB 2 the channel that controls effects, KNOB 3 / 4 pitch bend range up / down.
GLO button, page 2KNOB 1 (turn right) reset one bank to the voices last imported into it (KNOB 1-4 pick A-D, SELECT right confirms), KNOB 2 velocity, KNOB 3 glide mode, KNOB 4 glide time (mono only).
Hold SAVESave everything you changed: voices, effects, patterns, settings.
Send a DX7 bank over MIDIA screen asks which bank, A-D; KNOB 1-4 pick it (the docs don't say which knob is which bank).

What the lights mean

  • OCT- / OCT+: off at 0; slow blink at ±1, fast blink at ±2, solid at ±3.
  • HOME: blinking = Bluetooth on but not connected; solid = connected; off = Bluetooth off.
  • ENV, ARP, SEQ: on while that function is on. SAVE: on while saving. SEL: on while an effect is grabbed.
  • PLAY/STOP: orange when the sequencer is on and stopped, green while playing. REC: red while recording.
  • Keys: light while pressed and as the arpeggiator plays. With SEQ on: solid = a note on that step, off = empty, flashing = the step playing. In EDIT, the keys you can pick blink and the picked one is solid.

Before you switch firmware

  • Stock V15 has no way to back up your voices or patterns. The FM-1 only sends notes over MIDI, never voice data.
  • Back up in the firmware you are leaving first, with its own tool (above). Anything below marked at risk can be written over; whether an older saved copy survives depends on how often you saved, so do not count on it.
  • What installing Stock V15 does to the firmware you had before. update mode under stock (installing anything from stock): Reported in Felucca's source comments: stock's own updater stages into the margin above 0xE4FFF (where the Felucca family keeps its autosave and voice bank), keeps a VM backup in the 0xE8000 sector and its update record at 0xE8F00. Exact staging range not documented (only while stock runs an update) [reported]. install (M-VAVE's V15 package): The pinned V15 package contains a program image ending at 0x92FFF, covering Open’s USER projects, preferences, staging and sample header. This program extent is read from its flash.bin directory entry. Whether the closed native loader also formats or rewrites other data remains unknown.
    • Baud Girl FM-1+VA: Possibly at risk (layout reported or inferred): Baud Girl patterns (16, with locks). Carried over: Baud Girl presets (128) (her Virtual Analog and 8-Bit presets will not play on stock).

Installing this firmware replaces Open’s sixteen USER projects, preferences and sample header before its first start, including the first 24 KiB of sample storage. This follows Open’s source-defined USER layout and the incoming program range; export projects and device samples before leaving Open.
    • FM-106: Possibly at risk (layout reported or inferred): older stored user bank, if present (Beta4 does not store new edits). A valid user bank stored by an earlier FM-106 build can still be present and readable in Beta4; the bank risks listed here, if any, apply if it exists. FM-106 Beta4’s new user-sound edits are only in memory: panel save, delete and librarian bank commit do not store them, even when they report success. Read the unit into the librarian and export both user banks before switching or powering off; those exports omit sequence notes, locks and extended controls.
    • Hortator: Possibly at risk (layout reported or inferred): project A; project B; project C; project D; user samples USR1; user samples USR2; user samples USR3.

    • Melodee: Possibly at risk (layout reported or inferred): stock settings (and possibly patterns); stock Bluetooth data; stock voices (128 user patches, banks A-D).
    • FoMni: Possibly at risk (layout reported or inferred): stock settings (and possibly patterns).

    • ChoralRoot: Possibly at risk (layout reported or inferred): stock settings (and possibly patterns).
    • GHOULBOX: Possibly at risk (layout reported or inferred): stock settings (and possibly patterns).
    • M-VAVE FM-1 Open: Possibly at risk (layout reported or inferred): stock settings (and possibly patterns); stock Bluetooth data; stock voices (128 user patches, banks A-D). The factory-sample write runs by itself right after the Workbench installs Open, before any project save. The source-built V12 bank erases 0x8D000–0x9FFFF without another sample question. The shipped Workbench asset was not compared with the source.
    • FM-106: Possibly at risk (layout reported or inferred): stock settings (and possibly patterns).
    • Hortator: Possibly at risk (layout reported or inferred): stock settings (and possibly patterns).
    • OberVave: Possibly at risk (layout reported or inferred): stock settings (and possibly patterns); stock voices (128 user patches, banks A-D).
    • Polly: Possibly at risk (layout reported or inferred): stock settings (and possibly patterns); stock Bluetooth data; stock voices (128 user patches, banks A-D).
    • Skiff: Possibly at risk (layout reported or inferred): stock settings (and possibly patterns); stock voices (128 user patches, banks A-D).
  • Who reads whose data. Other firmwares reading Stock V15's data: Baud Girl FM-1+VA reads and uses Stock V15's stock voices (128 user patches, banks A-D). What Stock V15 reads of other firmwares' data: Stock V15 reads and uses Baud Girl FM-1+VA's Baud Girl presets (128) (her Virtual Analog and 8-Bit presets will not play on stock). Everything else of another firmware's looks empty or foreign to the reader.
  • Every way each write can happen, for all mapped firmwares: the flash atlas's table. Read in each firmware's source (closed ones: their docs or third-party reports); nothing was tested on a unit.
  • Keep the DX7 .syx banks you loaded, so you can send them again later. Write down patterns you care about.
  • One indirect way to back up, from Baud Girl's own docs (not tested by us): installing her FM-1+VA keeps your saved stock presets and patterns, and its browser Device Manager can then save all 128 presets and 16 patterns as files. FM-1+VA is closed source; install it at your own risk.
  • Coming back to stock from a custom firmware: assume stock overwrites that firmware's data (Melodee's author says so of his). Back it up with that firmware's own tool first. You need M-VAVE's own V15 file from its download page; the installers check it byte for byte and won't take a changed copy.

Where M-VAVE's documents disagree

  • Envelope: the older 109-page docs (the ones most people link) say ENV runs 0-8 and pressing ENV again goes Home. V15 runs 0-100%, starts off, and ENV switches it on and off. Those docs predate V13.
  • Reset Patches: the older docs say it restores all 128 voices to factory and KNOB 4 confirms. V15 resets one bank at a time, to the voices last imported into it, and turning SELECT right confirms.
  • Copying a voice: the V15 booklet says press SELECT to confirm; SELECT can't be pressed. M-VAVE's release notes say turn it, and we follow them.
  • Arpeggiator: the product page lists a Bidirectional mode; both sets of docs list Repeat instead.
  • Filter resonance: the MIDI document says 0-10; the docs and release notes say 0-100.
  • Pages: the SELECT entry talks about pages 1 and 2, but SEQ has three and each operator has six.

Also worth knowing: there are three separate transposes. OCT+/- with ALGORITHM (±12, global), the GLO key's voice transpose (0-48), and SEQ page 3 (±24, the pattern).
