Coming from another firmware

Pick the firmware on your FM-1 now to see what installing DUELL beta does to its data.

1 · Before you switch, back up on Stock V15

  • Back up first. Keep the DX7 .syx banks you loaded so you can send them again (a bank arrives over MIDI SysEx and you pick A-D). Another route: installing Baud Girl’s FM-1+VA keeps your saved stock presets, and its Device Manager can then save all 128 presets as a .syx file. FM-1+VA is closed source; install it at your own risk. It is unknown whether stock's 16 patterns come through or can then be backed up. Write down patterns you care about. To come back, you need M-VAVE's own V15 file from its download page; the installers check it byte for byte. Stock V15’s automatic pattern saves and SAVE writes may also replace ChoralRoot’s legacy sounds 1–32, VA patches, FM6 patches 1–32, CZ patches 1–32 and FM TONE patches, kept for returning to ChoralRoot 0.21 or older. Stock V15’s write locations are uncertain. Stock V15 has no backup of its own; it sends notes over MIDI, never voice data.

2 · What happens to your Stock V15 data

Possibly at risk

  • stock settings (and possibly patterns)

(The installer starts with its erase option selected for this firmware change. Clear it before installing to avoid this extra erase.)

When changes reach the unit

Patch and multi saves write while stopped. A patch save asks before replacing its slot; a multi save asks for a used or factory slot. Save has no undo for the stored slot. A multi always keeps both sounds and all steps, but can leave excess automation out and show AUTOMATION CUT. Every one of the 128 patch slots has reserved capacity for the largest sound; the code does not silently omit patch data when the store fills. Pattern save and erase change the working slot straight away, even while playing, then write after playback, held controls and sounding notes have all stopped. Settings also wait for silence. RESTORE LAST writes changed working music after ten quiet seconds, with at least a minute between successful saves; switching it off prevents both saving and startup restoration. Startup restores music with both parts unmuted. A successful first-start load of factory M01 can itself trigger that first autosave about ten quiet seconds later, before any owner edit; no minute-long gap applies before the first write. Loading any pattern clears the selected part’s automation and locks, with a question only if its current steps changed. A saved pattern also restores length, division, swing, gate and quantize; a factory pattern sets length to 16 and keeps the other four values. Recording automation over an otherwise unedited pattern does not make a pattern load ask before deleting it.

Saved-data actionWhat happens
PATCH RESTOREAfter confirmation, remove the selected saved patch and return its factory sound; stop playback first, with no undo for the saved patch.
RESTORE ALLAfter confirmation, remove every saved patch override and return the factory sounds; stop playback first, with no undo for the saved patches. Multis, pattern slots, user wavetables and settings stay.
MULTI ERASEAfter confirmation, remove this saved multi while stopped and return its factory multi where one exists, with no undo for the saved slot.
PATTERN ERASEAfter confirmation, remove this saved pattern now and write the change after all playback and notes stop, with no undo for the saved slot.
ERASE DATAAfter confirmation, erase every saved patch, multi, pattern, user wavetable, setting and working-music autosave, then restart; the separate FM6 bank stays, and undo cannot restore the erased data.
USB RESTOREThe editor validates the entire file before restoring any selected group and refuses a file containing multis saved by this release, even an installer backup. For a file it accepts, it asks before replacing complete selected groups, including empty slots, and attempts a safety archive first; unselected groups stay. Restored working music changes what plays immediately and may autosave later. Selecting Patches from an older file can clear later patch slots absent from that file.

A saved patch with its own SEQ pattern can replace steps 1–16 and the sequence’s length, division, swing, gate and quantize as you browse sounds, without a question. Its previous sequence is kept temporarily and returns on a later sound load if the borrowed notes and timing were not edited; another patch may immediately lend its own pattern instead.

Editor multi-save and factory-patch-restore commands give no firmware overwrite question: they try to stop playback and then write the chosen save area, without an undo for the replaced saved work. In DUELL’s bundled editor, patch rename asks for a name, loads that slot into the chosen part and saves it back under the new name; this replaces the part’s live sound and loses its unsaved sound edits, then writes the slot once playback stops without a further firmware question. This editor has no patch-category edit. The bundled editor also renames a multi already saved in DUELL: after the name prompt it reads the stored pair, changes the chosen name and writes the pair back when the transfer finishes and playback has stopped, preserving the partner’s record and the music in both. The firmware gives no further question and no saved-data undo; a factory-only multi must be saved before it can be renamed.

Changes to morph preferences, output mode and mix choices, scale, root, off-scale playing, part MIDI channels and MODULES queue a settings save after about two seconds without another settings change; the write waits until playback, notes and held controls stop and asks no question.

Before you switch firmware

  • Back up first. Before leaving another firmware, use its own backup tools while it still runs. Once DUELL is running, the installer’s Save a backup file reads the unit and downloads patches, saved multis, pattern slots, user wavetables, settings and current music, including multis saved by this beta. It leaves out the separate FM6 voice bank, so keep that bank’s original file. The editor’s Backup page uses different checks: its capture fails when current saved multis are present, and it refuses to restore any file containing them, including the installer’s downloaded file, before any selected group is written. The installer can capture that work; this beta’s bundled editor cannot restore that file. Back up before switching. See the switching advice in this section.

See the switching advice in this section. Back up with the firmware that made your work before installing or first starting DUELL; its automatic writes and the installer’s preselected erase can remove that work without a further question. Other firmwares can also overwrite DUELL saves at startup or during use.

  • Back up in the firmware you are leaving first, with its own tool (above). Anything below marked at risk can be written over; whether an older saved copy survives depends on how often you saved, so do not count on it.
  • What installing DUELL beta does to the firmware you had before.
    Show the detail

install (incoming DUELL update loader): Erase/program only differing program sectors after validating the complete package. Do not write flash head 0x00000–0x03FFF. This overwrites any other firmware data located in program space (accepted package with valid complete checks and chip-key/app verification). install (incoming DUELL update loader clears update records): Inspect sector tails and erase only valid update-record sectors. Ordinary saved music is not erased by this record cleanup. The data-store skip is separate from the record validation (After an install, erase only a 4 KiB sector whose last 256 bytes hold a valid update record (marker 0x5441 at +6 and a matching nonzero CRC16 over bytes 2..79): in practice the family's staging-record sector 0xE4000 and, on a first install from stock, stock's record sector 0xE8000. Saved music does not hold that record and is not at risk from this cleanup. This loader skips 0x97000-0xDFFFF). startup that finds nonblank update-staging prefixes: If either checked prefix is nonblank, erase all five sectors without asking. No valid own header required (first 4 bytes at 0xE0000 or first 8 at 0xE4F00 contain a byte other than 0xFF). first startup with no current settings (first quiet interval): Try loading factory M01 and queue settings even if an unreadable M01 prevents that load. At the first quiet interval, write an A/B settings copy without a save action or replacement question. Other mapped settings payloads do not satisfy the exact 584-byte PER4 check (missing/invalid current settings and no compatible restored session suppressing first_boot_pending). startup completes a retained pending FM6 bank upload: Copy newest valid type 32 FM6V staging record over invalid/older home bank. A compatible Felucca or GHOULBOX staged record qualifies (newer valid compatible staging record at 0xE5000/0xE6000 and home invalid or older). after install if the installer erase box stays selected: The browser installer sends ERASE_ALL after the new firmware starts. The box defaults selected unless detected DUELL, including no detection; an explicit owner choice is preserved. Erase all 32 stored objects/both copies (64 sectors) including unreadable foreign bytes; retain FM6 home bank and firmware. Restart, then first-start settings writes can occur again. For Felucca this covers settings, all four projects, both user-preset banks, FM6 user-preset sidecars, autosave, all USR1/USR3 and first 24 KiB of USR2; the separate FM6 voice bank is outside this wipe (successful install with erase checkbox selected). first startup after a successful factory M01 load, about 10 seconds after becoming quiet: The first-start M01 load happens after autosave_boot captured its baseline and can trigger the first autosave without an owner edit or question, even when the installer erase box was cleared. With no valid type-9 outer header/body, copy A is written at 0xE5000; an accepted outer copy, including a foreign-format payload rejected by proj_import, makes st_save select its alternate. The first write has no 60-second gap. A nonempty unreadable M01 can prevent the initial music change (invalid settings, no compatible restored autosave suppressing first_boot_pending, successful M01 load changes the baseline, RESTORE LAST ON, and 10 seconds with transport stopped, keys/buttons released, no active voices or editor transfer).

Carried over: FM6 bank B01–B32. Felucca may start with RESTORE LAST ON after DUELL, even if you turned it OFF before. DUELL saves its own settings at several points, replacing the earlier settings with ones Felucca cannot read; an older choice saved by another firmware can also mean the opposite here. Check MENU > SYSTEM > RESTORE LAST before you edit. ON allows automatic saving after edits and a pause with playback stopped, keys and buttons released, and no sound; OFF stops that autosave. Felucca may start with beta 2ND CORE ON or OFF after DUELL. Do not rely on your earlier choice: DUELL can replace the saved settings with ones Felucca cannot read. Check MENU > SYSTEM > 2ND CORE when you return. ON (BETA) can turn itself OFF and save settings if a sound calculation fails or takes too long; OFF prevents that second-core save.

At risk when you act: multis M01–M02; multis M03–M04; multis M05–M06; multis M07–M08; user wavetable USR1; user wavetable USR2; user wavetable USR3; multis M09–M10; multis M11–M12; multis M13–M14; multis M15–M16; patterns P01–P06. JIANT may start with RESTORE LAST ON or OFF after DUELL, even if you turned it OFF before. DUELL saves its own settings at several points, replacing the earlier settings with ones JIANT cannot read; an older choice saved by another firmware can also mean the opposite here. While ON, JIANT can save by itself about 10 seconds after start-up once stopped and idle, even without edits, and again after later edits and a pause. Check MENU > SYSTEM > RESTORE LAST straight after start-up. Hold SAVE once MENU is open to keep that idle wait reset while you check; the open menu alone does not stop it. OFF stops that autosave.

The official route first puts V15 back, then installs Groove OS. Treat this firmware’s saved work as lost and back it up with its own tools before starting. Groove OS’s project saves, autosave, preferences, sample uploads and extra installed pages can also replace leftover work; nobody has published which parts of storage they use. A sound missing from PRESETS may still occupy storage, and do not count on Groove OS’s own backups to keep it.
  • Who reads whose data. Other firmwares reading DUELL beta's data: Felucca reads and uses DUELL beta's FM6 bank B01–B32; GHOULBOX reads and uses DUELL beta's FM6 bank B01–B32. What DUELL beta reads of other firmwares' data: DUELL beta reads and uses Felucca's FM6 voice bank B1-B32; DUELL beta reads and uses GHOULBOX's FM6 voice bank B1–B32. Everything else of another firmware's looks empty or foreign to the reader.
  • Every way each write can happen, for all mapped firmwares: the flash atlas's table.

DUELL keeps 128 patch slots, 16 multis, 16 shared pattern slots, three user wavetables, settings and the last working music. The separate FM6 bank holds 32 voices. A patch or multi refers to a user wavetable by its slot, so it needs the same table in that slot. DUELL does not import Felucca projects, saved patches or settings; the separate FM6 voice bank is the exception.

Beta formats can change. This release rejects earlier autosave revisions and multi formats; old patches without the newer format marker also disappear from the list and are dropped when their storage group is next written. Factory sounds come from the installed version. Going back a version has no guaranteed conversion. An unreadable saved multi can appear under a factory name while LOAD says DAMAGED instead of loading that factory sound; this can also prevent the first-start M01 load.

The installer preselects data erase whenever it has not detected DUELL, including before detection; an explicit checkbox choice is kept. Leaving it selected erases the prior firmware’s data in DUELL’s save areas without a further question. See the switching advice in this section for the affected saved work. Clearing the box still allows the first-start settings write, a factory-M01 autosave after about ten quiet seconds, and conditional update-area cleanup without a question. Back up with the firmware that made the work before installing or first starting DUELL.

Before the first DUELL start, use the firmware that made your work to back it up outside the FM-1. See the switching advice in this section. DUELL does not recognize these foreign saves and does not ask before its automatic writes replace them.

A first start with unreadable settings can write replacement settings automatically. See the switching advice in this section for the affected saved work. These writes wait for playback, held controls and sounding notes to stop and give no question about the foreign work.

When that first start successfully loads factory multi M01, it can autosave without an owner edit about ten seconds after becoming quiet. See the switching advice in this section for the affected saved work. An unreadable saved M01 can block the factory load, so this autosave depends on the working music actually changing.

A start checks two small markers in the update staging area: the four bytes at its beginning and the eight bytes at the update-result marker. If either marker contains any nonblank byte, DUELL clears the whole staging area without a question. Data elsewhere in that area alone does not trigger cleanup; X0X or Polly recovery information by itself is not enough. See the switching advice in this section for the affected saved work. Stock or Baud Girl saved data may overlap; their exact locations are uncertain.

Later DUELL autosaves, patch or multi saves, deferred pattern writes, wavetable uploads, FM6-bank uploads from a compatible external editor or tool and restores can overwrite foreign work in their destination areas. See the switching advice in this section for the affected saved work. Stock and Baud Girl data can also be affected, with uncertain locations. A DUELL overwrite question concerns its own recognized saves; it gives no separate question about this other firmware’s work. DUELL’s bundled editor has no FM6-bank upload control; these uploads require another compatible editor or tool that sends the firmware’s bank-transfer commands. Later autosaves alternate between two storage areas; after one copy of another firmware’s save is hit, a later autosave can replace its remaining copy without a question. An FM6-bank upload from such an external tool clears the next autosave area as soon as it begins, even if the upload later fails, and a completed upload then replaces the separate bank area without a firmware question.

The installer’s selected erase clears DUELL’s settings, autosave, patch, multi, pattern and wavetable areas, including foreign bytes DUELL cannot read, without a further question. It leaves the separate FM6-bank destination out; bank uploads can overwrite that area later. See the switching advice in this section for the affected saved work. Make the prior firmware’s backup before DUELL starts.

Writes to shared storage can also remove other firmwares’ unfinished restores, pending updates and temporary bank transfers; keep the original files. Multi saves, erases and renames, patch saves, sends, imports, renames, FM6 edits and factory restores, wavetable uploads and erases, backup restores and erase-all actions, including installing with Erase saved data selected, can also replace ChoralRoot’s legacy sounds 1–32, VA patches, FM6 patches 1–32, CZ patches 1–32 and FM TONE patches, kept for returning to ChoralRoot 0.21 or older.

Where the docs and the firmware disagree

TopicThe docs sayThe source does
Tempo knob orderThe quick start places tempo on KNOB 1.TEMPO uses KNOB 1 clock, KNOB 2 tempo, KNOB 3 tap and KNOB 4 swing.
Mode page positionThe quick start places MODE on HOME’s second subpage.HOME cycles MORPH, MORPH SET, MODE and MIXER, so MODE is third.
Grid page referencesThe save instructions mention a GRID sequencer page. This firmware has STEP and AUTOMATION and no reachable GRID page.
Synth keys in the specificationAn early design section describes REC as recording into the arp’s held-note latch.REC toggles HOLD outside sequencer work and arms real step or live sequence recording on sequencer pages.
Encoder wordingThe first-sound example tells owners to press PRESETS and ALGORITHM.These are turn encoders: PRESETS browses patches and ALGORITHM selects the part.
Complete browser backupThe editor Backup page offers an archive containing saved multis. The installer can download current multis, but the editor Backup page cannot capture or restore a file containing them, including the installer’s file.
Installer erase defaultThe installer helper’s introduction says the erase option starts off.The actual choice function selects it unless DUELL was detected, including no detection. The installer reads that box and sends the erase command after a successful install.
SAVE hold in inherited commentsInherited comments describe holding SAVE as undoing the last load or sequence tool.Holding SAVE opens a save question; these undo comments are stale and there is no panel gesture calling that old undo function.
First startup output modeThe README calls DUEL the default output arrangement. With invalid settings and no restored session, startup chooses LAYER and tries to load M01 before queuing settings; an unreadable nonempty M01 reports DAMAGED and blocks that load.
Installer backup contentsThe install guide says the installer backup excludes multis and pattern slots. This release includes saved multis, patterns and user wavetables in its installer backup; restoring current multis through the editor remains blocked.
Reinstall data safetyThe recovery guide and quick start say saved work survives reinstalling, including a return from stock firmware. The installer preselects erase after stock or before detection unless the owner changes it, so reinstalling can erase saved work without a further question.
BASS MONO persistenceThe changelog says BASS MONO is a device setting excluded from multis and projects.BASS MONO is kept with the working music and multis, so a multi or session restore can change it.

Limits

  • Developer-only TEST builds and serial diagnostics are outside this release’s panel map.
  • The emulator’s browser storage and emulator-only download files are outside the device map.
  • Editor-only piano-roll gestures and the full MIDI protocol are outside the FM-1 panel map; device save, restore and flash consequences are recorded in the storage fragment.
