FM-1 firmware · v1.4.1
Melodee
Changed from 1.3.2: one to four tracks, a HOME chord view, assignable SELECT, 384 shared sound slots, FX racks and TONE, motion editing, continuous REC and whole-take undo. Hold EDIT to undo; hold SAVE to quick-save. Startup now repairs settings and migrates or resets preset banks. The 1.4.1 installer fixes the backup check before returning to official V15.

TapSwipe across the panel, then tap any control to see what it does on Melodee.
Start here
Melodee turns the FM-1 into a one-to-four-track synth and sequencer. Each track picks one of five engines: PROPHET (Prophet-5 Rev 4 programs, with Sequential's 200 factory programs), FM6 (DX7-style six-operator FM), CZ-1 (Casio's 64 preset tones), SID (the C64 chip) and DRUM (808, 909 and SID kits). It adds 70 tunings including microtonal ones, recording that keeps your played timing, three effect slots per track plus a shared effect chain, and USB audio in and out. It suits players who want classic synth sounds and like to play in, rather than program steps, and anyone pairing the FM-1 with an MPC (a scale mode maps MPC pads to scale notes). It is built on Felucca, but the panel works differently in many places, so don't assume Felucca habits carry over.
How the panel thinks
- ALGORITHM picks a track in use on every page. PRESETS changes the sound on Stage. SELECT turns pages away from HOME; on HOME it changes Settings > HOME SELECT (BPM by default). GLO + SELECT uses its own assignment. The button printed SEL is called SCL on Melodee's screens.
- A button opens its pages; press again for the next page. From another page, most buttons reopen the page you last used there. Page buttons act when you let go.
- OCT- and OCT+ shift the octave on both HOME views: Stage and the chord view. On other pages, and while a menu, question or popup is open, OCT- goes back and OCT+ enters or confirms.
- Hold OCT+ (about 0.7 s) for the page's sheet: a list of things to do with the sound, pattern or song.
- GLO and SCL open shortcut layers when held (keys and knobs become shortcuts, a map shows on screen). The hold time is 0.4 s unless you change Settings > HOLD (0.3-0.6 s). Using a key or knob while holding opens it at once. Double-press to keep a layer open.
- Hold EDIT to undo, or EDIT + OCT+ to redo. Recording takes have a whole-pattern snapshot; note edits and sound/pattern loads have their own histories. Hold SAVE to quick-save. Hold HOME for Settings.
- Hold LFO and turn knobs for temporary changes that snap back when you let go of LFO. OCT+ while holding keeps them.
- Long lists are list pages: KNOB 2 picks the row, KNOB 1 changes it, OCT+ opens the row's full list.
Play and pick sounds
| Do this | What happens |
|---|---|
| Turn ALGORITHM | Pick a track in use, up to four. Pages, keys and knobs follow it. |
| Turn PRESETS on Stage | Change the track's sound, through the list last chosen in the browser (all, favourites, recent or a category). A fast spin loads when the knob rests. Hold EDIT to go back. |
| SAVE three times (PRESETS) | The browser: KNOB 1 the list, KNOB 2 or PRESETS the sound, KNOB 3 favourite, KNOB 4 the engine (starts from its init sound). OCT+ keeps, OCT- goes back to the sound you had. |
| Play the keys | Notes on the selected track, F3 to G5 (MIDI 53-79 at octave 0). A DRUM track plays its kit on the General MIDI map, C4 is the kick. |
| OCT- / OCT+ on Stage | Octave down or up, 3 each way. Both together: back to 0. |
| KNOB 1-4 on Stage | The track's four sound knobs. PROPHET: cutoff, resonance, filter envelope, amp release. FM6: MLVL, MRAT, MEG, DTUN. CZ-1: wave, DCW, detune, vibrato. SID: wave, pulse width, cutoff, resonance. DRUM: tune, tone, decay, snap. |
| Hold OCT+ on Stage | Sound sheet, including Add track and Remove track. Add opens the browser on a new track; Remove asks first and needs stopped playback. You can keep one to four tracks. |
| Tap HOME while already on HOME | Switch between Stage and the chord wheel. Sound knobs and octave buttons keep their jobs. The last complete chord stays visible after release. |
| Turn SELECT on HOME | Change the chosen HOME SELECT value: BPM, modulation wheel, level, swing, transpose, chord, arp rate, pattern or OFF. |
Record
| Do this | What happens |
|---|---|
| REC | Arm or disarm the selected track. Playback doesn't start. Playing: recording waits for the track's next loop, then keeps going across loops until disarmed. STOP ends the take and leaves it armed for next start. Stopped and armed: playing a key or a MIDI note starts both playback and recording. |
| Hold REC, then PLAY | Arm and start at once. |
| Hold REC (about 0.7 s) | Capture: the bars you just played (while not recording) go into the pattern with their timing. Hold EDIT to undo. |
| SEQ > TEMPO, KNOB 3 | Recording quantize: OFF keeps your timing; a division snaps the take when recording ends. |
| Turn a sound knob while recording and playing | Recorded as motion (armed but stopped, the screen asks you to press PLAY). |
| Hold HOME | Settings: click, click level, count-in, note preview, chord entry (HOLD or ADD). |
Switching from your firmware
Pick the firmware on your FM-1 now to see what installing Melodee does to its data.
1 · Back up first, on Stock V15
- Stock V15 has no way to back up your voices or patterns. The FM-1 only sends notes over MIDI, never voice data.
- One indirect way to back up, from Baud Girl's own docs (not tested by us): installing her FM-1+VA keeps your saved stock presets and patterns, and its browser Device Manager can then save all 128 presets and 16 patterns as files. FM-1+VA is closed source; install it at your own risk.
2 · What happens to your Stock V15 data
Possibly at risk
(the layout is reported or inferred, not read in code)
- stock settings (and possibly patterns)
- stock Bluetooth data
- stock voices (128 user patches, banks A-D)
(weakest evidence: reported)

The pages
| Press | Pages, in the order further presses go | Hold |
|---|---|---|
| HOME | Stage; tap again on HOME for the chord view | Settings menu (about 0.7 s) |
| FX | Track FX rack; SELECT visits active slots, SHARED and its active slots. FX returns to the track rack | nothing |
| SEL (SCL) | SCALES, SCL list, CHORD | SCL layer |
| ENV | PROPHET, FM6, CZ-1: the engine's own envelopes. SID, DRUM: ENV, ENV DEST | nothing |
| LFO | the engine's own LFO pages (PROPHET, FM6, CZ-1), then LFO, LFO 2, LFO DEST, MOD | temporary knob changes |
| EDIT | the sound pages, in sections; EDIT again on a sound page opens the section map | undo |
| GLO | MIXER, GLOBAL, SYSTEM | GLO layer |
| SAVE | USER, PROJECT, PRESETS (the sound browser) | quick-save the project |
| ARP | ARP, ARP 2 | nothing |
| SEQ | NOTES, PATTERN, TEMPO, PATTERNS, SONG, then MOTION (once there is motion) and DRUM HIT (DRUM tracks) | PATTERNS; the keys pick patterns |
| REC | arms the selected track | Capture (on SONG: take the jam) |
On pages with four values, KNOB 1-4 change them in the order shown.
Shape a sound
| Do this | What happens |
|---|---|
| EDIT | The engine's pages, grouped in sections. SELECT turns pages, PRESETS jumps a section (on FM6 an operator at a time). |
| EDIT again on a sound page | The section map: KNOB 2 chooses a category; KNOB 1 or SELECT picks its page. Each category remembers its page. OCT+ opens it; OCT- or EDIT closes; HOME returns home. |
| ENV | PROPHET, FM6 and CZ-1: their own envelope pages. SID and DRUM: attack, decay, sustain, release, then ENV DEST (to filter, pitch, shape). |
| LFO | The engine's own LFO first, then the track LFO (rate, wave, phase, fade), LFO 2 (sync, retrigger, polarity), LFO DEST (pitch, filter, shape, level) and MOD (KNOB 2 picks one of four routes, KNOB 1 source, KNOB 3 destination, KNOB 4 amount). |
| EDIT, Voice section | A list: voice mode, glide, glide mode, priority, allocation, detune, pan, mute, spread. |
| DRUM track, EDIT | DRUM SOUND: KNOB 1 the drum, then its tune, decay and tone (snappy on the snare). DRUM MIX: its level. LANES pages: each lane's level. |
| SID, EDIT > CHIP | MODEL chooses 6581, 8580 or their C64 versions. The C64 models use one chip voice, updated at 50 Hz; POLY cycles held chord notes one frame each. |
| DRUM, EDIT > KIT, then HIT | KIT chooses 808, 909 or SID. On HIT with SID, KNOB 3 DIGI switches kick and snare to the chip’s volume-register playback; KNOB 4 is resonance. SID KIT and SID DIGI are also factory presets. |
| CZ-1, EDIT > Tools | Turn a knob right to pick NAME, LINE 1>2, LINE 2>1 or COMPARE; OCT+ does it. |
| PROPHET or FM6, EDIT > Store | The same U001-U384 library as USER, across all engines; OCT+ on a slot: Save here, Send, Init sound. |
| Hold LFO, turn knobs | Temporary change on most value pages; it snaps back when you let go of LFO. OCT+ while holding keeps it. |
| ARP | Mode, rate, octaves, gate; ARP 2: swing, probability, hold, order. The ARP light flashes on the beat while an arpeggio plays. |
Effects
FX opens the selected track's rack. KNOB 2 chooses one of three inserts or the shared row; KNOB 1 chooses the row's effect and KNOB 4 sets its mix. OCT+ opens an active slot, or the effect list for an empty slot; on the shared row it opens SHARED. A slot at OFF has no separate page. Press FX to return to the track rack.
On an active FX 1-3 or SEND FX 1-3 page, KNOB 1 is MIX, KNOB 2 rate/time/size, KNOB 3 character/depth, and KNOB 4 TONE for ECHO, ROOM and REVERB. TONE moves from DARK (less high end), through FULL, to THIN (less low end). OCT- returns to its rack.
SHARED has three slots and RETURN. KNOB 2 picks a row, KNOB 1 its effect, KNOB 3 ROUTE (CHAIN or SPLIT), KNOB 4 its amount. In CHAIN the slot rows set their mixes and the track rack's shared row sets this track's SEND. In SPLIT each SHARED slot row sets this track's send to that slot. The RETURN row sets the shared return in either routing. OCT- from SHARED returns to the track rack. There is no FX hold layer.
Hold OCT+ for about 0.7 s on SHARED or a SEND FX slot to open the Shared FX sheet; tapping OCT+ on RETURN opens it too. KNOB 2 picks Routing or Clear shared FX. On Routing, KNOB 1 chooses CHAIN/SPLIT and OCT+ switches between them. Clear shared FX asks first, then resets all three shared slots to defaults: their effects are OFF and TONE is FULL. Routing, return level and the tracks’ sends keep their values. If every shared slot is already OFF, the screen reports NOTHING TO CLEAR instead of asking.
Mix (GLO)
| Do this | What happens |
|---|---|
| GLO | MIXER: KNOB 1 level, KNOB 2 pan, KNOB 4 mute (right on, left off) of the selected track. GLO again: GLOBAL (KNOB 1 A4 pitch 400-480 Hz, KNOB 2 shared voice BUDGET (8-32 points), KNOB 3 clock INT/USB/TRS, KNOB 4 fine tune). Again: SYSTEM (MIDI input status, drum channel, channel routing, CPU load). |
| Hold GLO, press F#3 / G#3 / A#3 / C#4 | Mute or unmute track 1 / 2 / 3 / 4. |
| Hold GLO, hold F3 / G3 / A3 / B3 | Solo track 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 while held. |
| Hold GLO, press C4 | Unmute all. |
| Hold GLO, tap F4 | Tap tempo (from the third tap; internal clock only). |
| Hold GLO, turn KNOB 1-4 | Levels for tracks in use; a missing track does nothing. |
| Hold GLO, turn SELECT | The GLO SELECT assignment on any page; same choices as HOME SELECT, BPM by default. |
| Hold GLO, press PLAY | Restart from the top without stopping. |
| Hold GLO, then OCT- | Put mutes, levels and tempo back as they were. |
Scale and chords
| Do this | What happens |
|---|---|
| SEL (SCL) | SCALES: KNOB 1 family, KNOB 2 or PRESETS the scale (70 of them), KNOB 3 root, KNOB 4 key mode. OCT+ or OCT- go to the SCL list. |
| SCL again | The SCL list: root, scale, key mode (QNT), MPC degree (with QNT MPC only), transpose, favourite. KNOB 2 row, KNOB 1 value. |
| Key mode OFF / SNAP / WHITE / ALL / MPC | OFF: normal keyboard. SNAP: every key rounds down into the scale. WHITE: white keys walk the scale from C4 (the root), black keys silent. ALL: every key is the next scale note. MPC: an MPC's Bank H pads (over MIDI) play successive scale notes, and the keys act as in WHITE. |
| SCL once more | CHORD: KNOB 1 chord keys (off, triads or seventh chords built from the scale, or one fixed shape), KNOB 2 voicing. |
| Hold SCL, press any key | That note becomes the root. KNOB 1-4: root, scale, chord, voicing. OCT- puts it all back. |
Edit notes
| Do this | What happens |
|---|---|
| SEQ (NOTES) | Piano roll. KNOB 1 walks steps and notes, KNOB 2 pitch (an empty step gets a note), KNOB 3 length in quarter steps, KNOB 4 velocity. PRESETS zooms. |
| Play keys on NOTES (stopped) | Enter the keys held together into the cursor step; letting go moves on. |
| OCT+ on NOTES | Empty cursor: place the last note played. On a note: its sheet (length, velocity, chance, slide, move, copy, delete). |
| Hold ENV, turn SELECT or KNOB 1 | Change the note's length; KNOB 3 with ENV: 1/16-step lengths; KNOB 4 with ENV: slide on or off. |
| Hold SCL, turn SELECT or KNOB 1 | Move the note with its ties and chord. |
| Tap EDIT on NOTES | Delete the highlighted note. Hold EDIT while recording: erase everything under the playhead; finish the take, then hold EDIT to restore it. |
| Hold EDIT, then OCT- / OCT+ | Undo or redo note edits (8). On other pages the same gesture handles the recording take first, then clear/motion edits and sound or pattern loads. |
| Hold OCT+, turn SELECT, KNOB 1 or KNOB 2 | Select a range; OCT+ then offers move, copy, quantize, delete. Hold OCT+ alone: the pattern sheet (quantize, clear pattern, clear motion). |
| SEQ on a DRUM track (grid) | White keys are steps 1-16 of the page; F#3 to A#4 pick the lane (kick, snare, clap, closed hat, open hat, tom, rim, bell); hold C#5 for accents; D#5 and F#5 page through longer patterns. KNOB 1 step, KNOB 2 lane, KNOB 3 hit, KNOB 4 accent. EDIT clears the step. |
| SEQ > DRUM HIT | KNOB 1 walks the hits, KNOB 2 the drum, KNOB 3 that hit's pitch, KNOB 4 its length. EDIT deletes the hit. |
Patterns and songs
| Do this | What happens |
|---|---|
| Hold SEQ, tap F3 to F4 (white keys) | Pick pattern 1-8 on release (switches at the loop end). An empty pattern arms one pass only when this track is unarmed; a continuous REC arm already in place stays continuous. Double-tap a used pattern within 0.3 s to toggle one-pass REC. |
| Hold SEQ, hold a pattern key for 1 s | Opens its question. Press that key again or OCT+ to delete; another pattern key copies there; OCT- cancels. While playing, deletion or copying over a used/current pattern waits for the loop end. |
| Hold SEQ, press F#3 / G#3 / A#3 / C#4 | Select track 1 / 2 / 3 / 4, if it exists. |
| Hold SEQ, turn SELECT | Next or previous pattern. |
| Hold SEQ (about 0.7 s), or SEQ > PATTERNS | The active tracks each have eight pattern choices. Turn KNOB 1-4 to queue a pattern on the corresponding track. OCT+: Copy to or Delete pattern. OCT- clears the queue. |
| SEQ > SONG | KNOB 1 section, KNOB 2 track, KNOB 3 its pattern, KNOB 4 repeats. OCT+ or PLAY plays the song. Hold OCT+: insert, duplicate, delete section, clear song. |
| Hold REC on SONG | Turn the patterns you switched while jamming into the song. |
| SEQ > MOTION | Recorded knob moves: KNOB 1 playback on/off, KNOB 2 lane, KNOB 3 step, KNOB 4 value (inserts a point if needed). With SEQ held, KNOB 2 clears the selected lane; KNOB 4 removes the chosen point. EDIT held undoes edits. Stop the song arrangement before editing. |
| Clear a pattern or all motion; delete or replace a pattern | The destructive edit waits for the track loop to finish during playback. COPY AT LOOP END, DELETE AT LOOP END or CLEAR AT LOOP END confirms the queue; affected pattern keys breathe while SEQ is held. WAIT LOOP means the selected track is waiting to start recording. Individual notes, hits, lane edits and live erasing remain immediate. |
Save, load and back up
| Do this | What happens |
|---|---|
| SAVE (USER) | U001-U384, shared by every engine, including each sound's native patch. KNOB 1 or 2 picks a slot, OCT+ opens Load, Save here, Rename, Send, Erase (opens on Save here). EDIT renames. |
| SAVE twice (PROJECT) | Projects A-D, the template (T), New song. OCT+: Load, Save here, Rename, Boot (load at power-on), Erase. Load replaces the music you are working on without asking. Past T: New song, then OCT+. |
| Hold SAVE, or SAVE and REC together | Writes the project over its slot at once, with no question and no undo (playback stops first). |
| Autosave | On by default: stopped and untouched for 5 s, a project that has a slot is written back to it, without asking. Settings > AUTOSAVE turns it off. |
| Hold OCT+, turn a knob on USER | Select several slots to send or erase together. |
| Naming | White keys type letters phone-style (F3 = A, B; G3 = C, D ...), D#4 or D#5 switch to digits. F# moves left, A# right, G# space, C# deletes. KNOB 1 cursor, KNOB 2 character. OCT+ saves, OCT- cancels. Native name limits are 20 characters for PROPHET, 10 for FM6 and 16 for CZ-1; other names use 12. |
| Web editor | Complete backup and restore, single sounds as files, .syx for PROPHET, FM6 and CZ-1. |
MIDI and USB
SYSTEM > ROUT selects the four-channel range 1-4, 5-8, 9-12 or 13-16. Only channels in that range play, and missing tracks are silent; SEL receives all channels on the selected track. The chosen DRUM channel redirects to the first drum track only inside the range. USB and TRS follow the same rules.
USB audio is one duplex device named Melodee. Host volume and mute affect computer playback, while synth recordings keep their levels. USB INPUT still chooses stereo master or four mono tracks; USB AUDIO enables either direction. Changing the layout reconnects USB.
Settings (hold HOME)
KNOB 2 or PRESETS picks a row, KNOB 1 changes it, OCT+ steps or opens it, OCT- closes. Rows: COLOR, FONT (RUBIK or PIXEL), HOLD, LIGHTS, USB AUDIO, USB INPUT (stereo or four track stems), AUDIO CLICK, CLICK LEVEL, COUNT-IN, NOTE PREVIEW, CHORD ENTRY, AUTOSAVE, PICKER POPUPS, KNOB ACCEL, HOME SELECT, GLO SELECT, SCREEN OFF, CALIBRATION, ABOUT, SOUND DESIGNER, BACK. PICKER POPUPS OFF keeps named-value edits inline; explicit lists and action sheets still open. There is no OVERCLOCK setting; the firmware leaves the clock alone. COLOR has eight palettes: NIGHT, DAY, CONTRAST, SUNSET, OCEAN, NEON, CANDY and LO-FI.
The sound designer (from Settings or the sound sheet) starts with KNOB 1 engine, KNOB 2 start point, KNOB 3 page set, then OCT+ / OCT- or PRESETS move between stages, SELECT turns pages, SAVE compares with the original, HOME finishes.
Lights
Buttons: the button whose pages you are on is lit, idle buttons glow faintly, a layer's button blinks while its map shows. PLAY is lit while playing and breathes during count-in; REC lights when any track records, even with another track selected; it breathes when tracks are armed but none is recording. OCT- / OCT+ show the octave shift on both HOME views. On other pages or with an overlay open, OCT- is lit for Back and OCT+ lights or blinks when it can enter or confirm. Keys: lit while sounding (MIDI too), faint for playable keys (the scale with QNT OFF), patterns and track selection while SEQ is held (armed track keys breathe), the grid on DRUM tracks. Settings > LIGHTS sets the level. PLAY's green LED is not used. Stage's armed track rows have a red border: breathing while waiting, flashing on beats while recording.
Special gestures
| Do this | What happens |
|---|---|
| Hold OCT- alone while switching on | Requests the retained USB update loader; three short key-light flashes mark loader handover, one long flash ROM UBOOT fallback. |
| Hold OCT- and OCT+ while switching on | HARDWARE CALIBRATION: press each button and turn each knob right when asked. |
| Hold OCT- and OCT+ for 5 s | Update mode (countdown from 2 s; let go to cancel). |
| Any control while the screen is off | Wakes the screen only. |
What overwrites without asking
- No question: quick-save (hold SAVE or SAVE + REC); autosave; PROJECT > Load; saving the template over a readable template; startup repair of foreign settings and unreadable preset banks. SEQ's 1-second pattern question is itself the confirmation: choosing a different key there copies without a second question.
- Immediate sheet edits: Delete note, Clear hit and Clear lane run as soon as you choose them; there is no confirmation screen. Init sound on the PROPHET or FM6 Store sheet also resets the current sound immediately. Hold EDIT can undo the PROPHET reset; the FM6 reset takes no undo snapshot. With autosave on, the reset can be written to the current project slot after 5 seconds stopped and idle.
- Asks first: saving over a used project or sound slot, erasing a slot, clearing a pattern, track, song or all motion, deleting a pattern or song row, PATTERNS > Copy to over a used pattern, Init sound from Stage or a sound sheet, removing a track, New song with unsaved changes, taking a jam over an existing song, and explicitly replacing protected settings/templates. Clearing one motion lane or point is immediate and undoable.
Before you switch firmware
- Back up first. Export the music and sounds you need before upgrading. The web editor's Complete backup holds the current music, settings/template and projects A-D, plus all 384 shared sound slots. It uses 29 archive objects. The filename begins Melodee-backup; its internal format label still says felucca-backup. Restore it through Melodee's editor. Undo history and another firmware's data are outside this archive. The release recovery tool makes a full flash backup before erasing; keep that file too.
- Restoring an older backup. Restoring an older 28-object archive first clears the current U379-U384 bank, before any archived objects are written, although that archive contains no copy of those six slots. Legacy Prophet conversion can later fill them with spill sounds; it does not keep their current contents. Back up the current library before restoring an older archive.
- Startup writes changed. Compatible older Melodee presets migrate into the shared library; unreadable preset banks can reset without asking. Foreign settings can also be replaced automatically. Migration or cleanup progress appears before those writes. After a preset migration error, OCT+ continues with presets protected; OCT- offers a separate confirmation to wipe all user sounds. An interrupted confirmed wipe resumes next boot. Projects keep OLD FORMAT protection.
- Back up in the firmware you are leaving first, with its own tool (above). Anything below marked at risk can be written over; whether an older saved copy survives depends on how often you saved, so do not count on it.
- What installing Melodee does to the firmware you had before.
Show the detail
install (loader): App range remains 0x4000-0x92FFF. For packages containing CRSTUB/valid CRBM commit metadata: before any changed body sector, erase marker sector 0x91000; update differing stub/directory sector 0x4000 first, remaining body sectors next, marker sector last. Marker at 0x91FE0 holds CRBM magic, format 1, body length, body CRC and marker CRC. Unmarked legacy packages retain ascending write order; damaged marked packages are rejected before erase. No flash-head or musical-data relocation (For a marked CRSTUB/CRBM package, invalidate marker before differing body writes and commit marker last; legacy unmarked packages use ascending order; damaged marked package refused before erase). install (loader): After the host confirms success the loader clears the RAM update record and scans every sector from 0xFB000 down to 0x93000: a sector whose last 256 bytes start with a valid update record (bytes 6-7 = 0x5441 and a matching CRC-16) is ERASED whole. This removes Melodee's own staging record sector 0xE4000 and any other firmware's update record in that range (the stock firmware's is reported at 0xE8F00 by the Felucca map, not checked here) (Only sectors in 0x93000-0xFBFFF whose last 256 bytes hold a valid update record are erased. Current compact UPB2 banks and project extension tails stay erased; project base sectors remain within the scan. Settings at0xFC000/0xFD000 are outside this loader scan). update: When an update is started from a running Melodee: erase 0xE0000-0xE4FFF, write the package's loader from 0xE0020, verify it, write a LOADER.BIN head at 0xE0000, wait for the host's success, then write the update record at 0xE4F00 and reset. Any failure erases the area again. Melodee stages its own family's loader (marked FELUCCA-LOADER-1) or the official M-VAVE loader; the official one only if the package's flash head 0x0000-0x3FFF equals the unit's, and that loader rewrites the whole flash.bin including the head (the code's own comment) (an M-UPGRADE session from the installer or the web installer's Return to V15). every start-up: At startup ota_staged checks the loader outer/inner headers and CRCs, own identity marker, compressed-block lengths and total decompressed-length accounting. It does not decompress or validate the compressed body contents. Structurally accepted own staging is retained: if it ends before the final sector, only dirty record sector 0xE4000 is erased; if it extends into that sector, all is retained. Staging that fails these structural checks is scanned and all five sectors are erased when any byte is used. Cleanup does not run after an earlier boot maintenance error (With flash_ok and no earlier boot maintenance error: retain structurally accepted own loader staging, even if corruption inside an unchecked compressed body remains; otherwise erase dirty staging). first start-up after another firmware: Read supported legacy preset banks, convert UPB1/FM6/CZ/P5 into shared UPB2 in existing A/B objects. FM6 sidecars are embedded before source conversion. Old Prophet slots 18-25 spill into the two extra positions of former 16-slot banks, then new bank21. Only needed valid-used spill records write a destination. Missing matching bank alone does not write. Same-object FELU record with unsupported bank shape, or invalid used records inside a readable bank, causes RESETTING PRESETS and immediate A/B bank save, no question. Valid entries are preserved; unreadable entries are discarded. Foreign header mismatches have no matching commit and remain empty/unwritten. Explicit separate confirmation from a preset error writes WIPE-PENDING in bank21 then empties every preset object twice. A later boot with the marker resumes this wipe automatically (Only matching committed bank repair/conversion or required legacy Prophet spill; absent/mismatched headers by themselves are untouched. Interrupted confirmed wipe resumes). every start-up: At boot missing/foreign/invalid settings are reset, or supported legacy settings ownership/normalization saved, immediately without a question. OVERCLOCK fault saves have been removed (when defaults, ownership or normalization differ; unknown owned schemas/templates protected). every start-up: Holding OCT- and OCT+ at power-on runs the panel calibration and saves the settings (only when both buttons are held at power-on (an owner action)). every start-up: A loaded supported older Melodee BOOT project (FUN16-FUN21, standalone or nested in FBKK) can be repacked to FUN22 by default-on autosave after 5 seconds stopped and untouched, only if packed bytes differ. Same base/extension address pairs. Projects remain OLD FORMAT protected when no supported parser succeeds; they are not part of preset startup repair (A supported older BOOT project loads, default-on autosave is enabled, transport stops and packed bytes differ after five seconds untouched). update: The host recovery tool (for a unit in UBOOT) first reads the whole flash into a backup file, then writes only program sectors 0x4000-0x92FFF that differ, refusing any other address. 1.3.2's tool also accepts the unmodified official V15 FM-1.fwsc (pinned SHA-256); the same range applies (run by the owner with --write). update: Back up and return to official V15 still verifies the package, captures complete editor archive unless Skip backup is selected, asks confirmation, and installs using the official loader (same flash-head requirement). Backup capability detection now accepts 1.4 archive support independently of motion/UI versions. Rescue-loader resume requires prior-backup or skip acknowledgement. Current archive has 29 IDs, including new shared tail bank. Official V15 subsequent data writes remain unverified by this source (owner action; refuses an unverified package; from the update loader (no running Melodee) it needs the 'already backed up' or 'skip backup' box).
- Stock V15: Possibly at risk (layout reported or inferred): stock settings (and possibly patterns); stock Bluetooth data; stock voices (128 user patches, banks A-D).

Installing this firmware replaces Open’s sixteen USER projects, preferences and sample header before its first start, including the first 24 KiB of sample storage. This follows Open’s source-defined USER layout and the incoming program range; export projects and device samples before leaving Open.
- FM-106: At risk by itself: octave, last selected preset and MIDI preferences. At risk by itself, under a condition: older stored user bank, if present (Beta4 does not store new edits). A valid user bank stored by an earlier FM-106 build can still be present and readable in Beta4; the bank risks listed here, if any, apply if it exists. FM-106 Beta4’s new user-sound edits are only in memory: panel save, delete and librarian bank commit do not store them, even when they report success. Read the unit into the librarian and export both user banks before switching or powering off; those exports omit sequence notes, locks and extended controls.

- Who reads whose data. No other firmware reads Melodee's data, and Melodee reads none of theirs.
- Every way each write can happen, for all mapped firmwares: the flash atlas's table. Read in each firmware's source (closed ones: their docs or third-party reports); nothing was tested on a unit.
- Updating or going back. The current editor reads preceding complete backups. The supplied v1.3.2 cannot read v1.4.1 shared preset banks, FUN22 projects or the TPLL template. With autosave on, merely loading an older project can rewrite it as FUN22 after 5 seconds stopped and idle. Normal first startup converts a supported v1.3.x template to TPLL during the settings repair. Back up with the previous firmware before updating if you may return. In v1.3.2 these projects show OLD FORMAT and are protected; the unreadable template is protected too. Compatibility with v1.4.0 was not checked. Projects and templates keep their track count; older formats load with four tracks. Early PROPHET banks at 0x89000 are still ignored.
- Backup limitation read in source. A nondefault voice BUDGET is packed into the saved settings. The current backup settings validator still accepts only the old USB-setting range, so that settings object can be refused during restore. Nothing here was tried on a unit.
- Returning to official V15. The updated installer accepts Melodee 1.4's backup capability, saves a backup before asking to flash, and still offers Skip backup. Stock cannot read Melodee's music and can overwrite it. The return does not require installing 1.4.1 first if you already run 1.4.0.
- Startup and the second core. Current downloads use both cores. Fault checks can retire the second core until power-off; an early crash starts the next session on one core. There is no OVERCLOCK menu or current Single core download. The boot stub can request the retained update loader after an interrupted update; the first installation's boot-sector write still needs uninterrupted power.
Where the docs and the firmware disagree
| Topic | Docs say | Firmware 1.4.1 does |
|---|---|---|
| What holding REC does | The recording guide still says REC held opens the mixer. | REC held captures recent playing, or takes the jam on SONG. GLO opens MIXER. |
| OCT- / OCT+ while editing notes | README Controls still assigns the octave buttons to moving the step cursor during synth editing. | Off HOME they are Back and Enter: OCT+ places a note or opens its sheet; OCT- goes back. KNOB 1 moves the cursor. |
| Loading Felucca projects | README compatibility still says Felucca 1.0 projects enter pattern 1. | The importer accepts supported Melodee schemas, FUN16 through FUN22, rather than Felucca project records. |
| Choosing the BOOT project | README assigns BOOT to PROJECT's KNOB 2. The docs also list direct LOAD and SAVE controls on KNOB 3 and 4. | PROJECT uses KNOB 1 and 2 to choose a slot; KNOB 3 and 4 do nothing. Boot, Load and Save here are rows in the slot's OCT+ sheet. |
| Starting a new song | README asks for KNOB 3 to choose New song after turning KNOB 1 past the template. | KNOB 1 or 2 moves past T to New song, then OCT+ opens it. KNOB 3 is unused on PROJECT. |
| The SCL settings page | README assigns the SCL page's KNOB 2 directly to saving or removing a scale favourite. | SCL uses a list of settings. KNOB 2 moves the row; KNOB 1 changes it. Favourite is one row, and MPC degree appears with QNT MPC. |
| Turning PRESETS on Stage | README Browsing sounds says turning PRESETS opens the browser. | On HOME, PRESETS changes the selected track's sound in place. The browser itself is SAVE > PRESETS. |
| Undo after browsing | README Browsing sounds still tells you to hold SAVE to revert the sound. | EDIT held undoes the load. SAVE held saves the project, stopping playback first. |
| What FX opens | README Controls says FX opens the insert pages directly. | FX first opens the rack. Choose a slot and OCT+ to open it; empty slots open their type list. FX from a slot returns to the rack. |
| Keys on DRUM SOUND and DRUM MIX | The docs say black keys choose a lane and white keys choose a drum on DRUM SOUND and DRUM MIX. | Those EDIT pages use KNOB 1 to choose the drum. The grid key mapping applies on NOTES and DRUM HIT; keys on DRUM SOUND or DRUM MIX play notes through the kit. |
| What the HOLD setting times | The docs describe HOLD as the duration for long actions on buttons and knobs. | HOLD sets the GLO/SCL quick-layer threshold. HOME, EDIT, SAVE, REC, SEQ and the page-sheet hold use their separate 0.7 s threshold; the encoders have no push action. |
| Unsupported presets at startup | The README compatibility section and the storage plan say unreadable older preset formats stay protected as OLD FORMAT. | Startup clears unsupported matching-object preset banks and unreadable entries, with no replacement question. Compatible entries survive and supported preceding banks convert. Projects retain OLD FORMAT protection. The README release notes and boot-safety document describe the new reset policy. |
| Restoring settings with a changed device voice budget | The README describes complete backups containing the shared slots and restoring preceding complete backups through the current editor. | A nondefault device VOICE BUDGET is saved in tagged high bits of ext.usb_off. The settings-restore validator only accepts ext.usb_off values 0-3, so it rejects that settings object. Other objects commit separately and may already have been restored. This is read from the code, not tested on a unit. |
| Which library the sound designer saves to | The sound-designer guide separates native engine banks from the general user presets. | All engines use the same 384 slots. Native engine adapters store their patch in that shared library. |
| The storage plan’s unused sectors | The storage table lists 0x9D000 and 0x9E000 as unused. | Those sectors form the final A/B pair of the shared preset library. |
Mapped from keremimo/melodee at v1.4.1 (1cccd69), 2026-10-16. This refresh was read in the release source; nothing was tested on a unit. Historical check notes in the JSON describe v1.3.2. The sources are in melodee.json. Melodee is GPL-3.0-only, by Kerem Kilic (Ellic Studio), based on Felucca by Leo Kuroshita (Hügelton Instruments).
