Play chords, strum and use the keys

The selected track's chord-machine mode gives the keys these jobs, including in the underlying synth interface while CHRD stays on HI; held layer buttons, the naming screen and the drum grid take over the keys.

Do thisWhat happens
Choose PLAY with ALGORITHMThe seven left white keys play chords and the nine right white keys form the strumplate.
Choose STRUMA chord key rolls its notes with 200, 80 or 40 milliseconds between notes, set by STRUM speed.
Choose LEADEvery white key plays one scale note, starting at the selected tonic around C4; several keys can sound together and there is no strumplate.
Choose DRONEA chord stays after release and the next chord replaces it; its release envelope provides the overlap.
Choose ARPThe most recently held chord feeds the arp; ARP ONLY plays its pattern alone, CHORD+ARP adds the chord and RHYTHM+ARP pulses the chord beneath it.
Choose REPEATHeld chords pulse at the selected rate; a key pressed during a silent gap joins the next pulse.
Play F3, G3, A3, B3, C4, D4 or E4 in DEGREE layoutThese are chord degrees 1 through 7, from the selected tonic.
Choose PIANO layoutThose keys use their own letters, snapped to the selected scale, instead of counting degrees from F3.
Play F4, G4, A4, B4, C5, D5, E5, F5 or G5 in PLAY, STRUM, DRONE, ARP or REPEATThey play strumplate notes 1 through 9, rising through the notes of the last built chord; before a chord has played, the plate uses the tonic chord.
Release a strumplate keyIts note ends, including with HOLD on or in DRONE.
Release a chord in PLAY or STRUMIts notes end unless HOLD is on; STRUM also cancels the rest of its unfinished roll.
Release a chord in ARPUnless HOLD keeps it, the arp follows the last chord key still held and stops when no chord remains.
Release a chord in REPEATUnless HOLD keeps it, that chord ends; the pulse stops when no chord remains.
Release a chord in DRONEThe chord continues until another chord or mode replaces it.
Change a direction, press INVERT or press LOCK while a plate note soundsThe current source can rebuild that plate note as a complete chord based on the plate key's own degree.

The octave buttons move the chord keyboard and strumplate together; the chord keys normally sound an octave below their printed pitches, while LEAD starts an octave above the chord keys.

Enter a chord sequence

Do thisWhat happens
Choose SEQUENCERAll sixteen white keys enter chords, repeating the seven degrees across higher octaves; there is no strumplate here.
Press a white keyReplaces the current step with its degree, octave and held direction, sounds the chord, then advances the entry cursor without a question.
Hold a direction and press a white keyStores that direction with the step; the step does not retain an inversion or chord lock.
Press F#3Replaces the current step with a rest and advances the cursor without a question.
Release a white keyEnds the live chord unless HOLD is on; the entered step stays in the sequence.
Change the key, scale, bass or voicesPlayback rebuilds the sequence's chords from those current choices.

The sequence spans four to sixteen steps and each step lasts one beat; the MODE menu chooses its length, SELECT on the home screen moves the entry cursor, and PLAY starts or stops playback.

Coming from another firmware

Pick the firmware on your FM-1 now to see what installing fm1-chord does to its data.

1 · Before you switch, back up on Stock V15

  • Back up first. Keep the DX7 .syx banks you loaded so you can send them again (a bank arrives over MIDI SysEx and you pick A-D). Another route: installing Baud Girl’s FM-1+VA keeps your saved stock presets, and its Device Manager can then save all 128 presets as a .syx file. FM-1+VA is closed source; install it at your own risk. It is unknown whether stock's 16 patterns come through or can then be backed up. Write down patterns you care about. To come back, you need M-VAVE's own V15 file from its download page; the installers check it byte for byte. Stock V15’s automatic pattern saves and SAVE writes may also replace ChoralRoot’s legacy sounds 1–32, VA patches, FM6 patches 1–32, CZ patches 1–32 and FM TONE patches, kept for returning to ChoralRoot 0.21 or older. Stock V15’s write locations are uncertain. Stock V15 has no backup of its own; it sends notes over MIDI, never voice data.

What Les checked

fm1-chord v0.3Scanned October 30, 2026

What we checked for

  • The file is exactly the one its author published
  • It's the same file we saw when this release first came out
  • It opens cleanly as an FM-1 firmware, nothing damaged
  • It doesn't show up on your computer as a keyboard, mouse or other input device
  • It doesn't show up as a USB drive or network adapter
  • Its text mentions no computer command tools, like PowerShell, Terminal or a download command

What we found

  • MIDI and audio, as expected
  • A serial port, which many FM-1 firmwares keep for debugging. It can't type into your computer.

Not checked yet

  • Its update loader, the part that writes the firmware onto your FM-1. A person hasn't reviewed it yet.
  • What it does while it's running. We read the file; we don't run it.
  • Whether the file was built from its published source code.

StatusScanned, nothing harmful found

Les has mapped its controls for v0.3.

Les scans every firmware here whose file is public, and shows what it checked and what it found. A scan lowers the risk; it can't rule it out. This firmware is made by its author, not by Les or M-VAVE. Back up first, and install at your own risk. How Les scans firmware

Start, play and find a page

The firmware calls the printed SEL button SCL. The encoders turn; they do not click. Play-mode key roles keep working while chord menus are open. In the hidden synth they also apply when CHRD is HI and no grid or shortcut layer takes the keys.

Change the chord with the black keys

Do thisWhat happens
Press F#3 (INVERT) with a chord heldCycles its inversion through root, first and second; an unlocked inversion clears when the chord is released.
Press G#3 (LOCK) with a chord and a direction heldRecords the direction's chord change and the inversion for later presses; repeating LOCK on that chord unlocks it.
Press G#3 with an inverted chord held and no directionLocks that inversion and the plain chord; pressing LOCK again unlocks it.
Release G#3 or F#3There is no extra release action.
Keep the direction held after pressing LOCKThe source applies that direction again to the stored change until release; UP in DEFAULT can flip the newly locked chord back, and root shifts can be doubled.
Change the selected key or scale after lockingThe locked chord follows the new key and scale; its quality and relative root shift are kept.
Press A#3 (HOLD)Toggles the latch for chords and LEAD notes; switching it off releases latched keys on the next audio block, but DRONE sustains independently and does not end when HOLD is switched off.
Release A#3HOLD keeps its chosen on/off state.
Press a chord that HOLD already latchedTakes it back under the key without starting it again.
Hold two directionsThe most recently pressed one wins; releasing it returns to the previous direction still held.
Change a direction while a chord soundsUnchanged pitches stay sounding and the changed pitches are replaced; a STRUM roll in progress is replaced by the new chord.

Each direction uses the selected JOYSTICK table; OG has the same chord changes as DEFAULT.

In LEAD the direction and inversion choices do not change note pitches; in DRUM LOOP they do not change the playing loop, in MIXER they do not change the mix, and CHORD HIRO judges the degree alone.

Play slash bass

Do thisWhat happens
Set BASS to SLASH, hold a chord key, then press another in PLAYThe first key supplies the bass and the new key supplies the chord; earlier chords stop.
Use the same gesture in STRUMThe new chord rolls above the first held key's bass.
Release the newer chord in PLAY or STRUMThe earlier bass key returns to its own chord while still held, unless HOLD kept the newer chord.
Release the first bass key while the newer chord remainsThe sounding chord is rebuilt over its own root.
Hold a chord, then press another in ARP or REPEAT with SLASHThe new chord uses the first held key's root as its bass, within the mode's arp or pulse behavior.

SLASH is the initial bass setting; LEAD plays independent notes instead of slash chords, and DRONE replaces the earlier chord when a new chord is played.

Play drums, loops and the mixer

The following white-key groups share a job in these modes; their release action ends DRUM pad repeats, leaves DRUM LOOP running, and leaves MIXER switches in their chosen state.

Answer the games

Do thisWhat happens
Choose CHORD HIROThe white keys answer chord degrees across the whole keyboard; the chart has ten songs.
Press the required degree in CHORD HIROScores its timing and plays the chart's chord; the chart supplies its own modification, so a held direction is not part of the answer check.
Press the wrong degree in the active windowCounts a miss for that chart chord.
Press too early, while stopped, or after that chart chord was already judgedThe press is ignored.
Release a CHORD HIRO keyDoes not stop its chart chord; the game sets the sounding duration.
Choose EAR TRAINERThe white keys answer degrees for six levels covering chords, progressions and intervals.
Answer in levels 3 or 4Both the degree and the held direction must match; other chord levels check the degree, and interval levels check the interval's degree.
Answer while the trainer is waitingPlays the answer briefly and checks it; presses while the question or result is playing are ignored.
Press F#3 in EAR TRAINERReplays the question while waiting for an answer.
Release an EAR TRAINER keyLeaves the submitted answer unchanged.

CHORD HIRO uses timing windows of ±200, ±150, ±100 or ±50 milliseconds; EAR TRAINER moves to its next question after showing the result.

Connections and startup

Do thisWhat happens
Power on holding HOME + SAVEHolding HOME and SAVE for three seconds after power-on erases saved settings, P1 to P4 snapshots, projects, user sounds and the FM6 bank, resets calibration and reboots without undo; uploaded samples remain.
Power on holding OCT− + OCT+Starts hardware calibration; boot requests a settings save afterward without a question even if thirty seconds of inactivity cancels to the old mapping, writing only if settings differ.
Press OCT− + OCT+Holding both octave buttons for five seconds enters the bootloader, with a countdown from two seconds; releasing either earlier cancels.
Turn MASTERChanges overall output volume.
Press USB-CConnects USB MIDI in and out, stereo audio capture and firmware updates, with editor and backup support present in source but no working editor route established.
Press USB-CA working v0.3 editor or backup route has not been established; the repository contains editor source, so record important settings and capture audio externally before switching rather than relying on Save backup or P1–P4.
Press USB-CIf an editor is made operational and verified, its Restore backup asks once in the browser, then replaces included stored items, including empty slots, and loads the current synth project last without undo; interruption can leave a partial restore, and an older file without an FM6 bank leaves that bank unchanged.
Press MIDI inputReceives MIDI through the input jack with the hidden synth’s routing and clock settings; the chord SOUND menu’s MIDI IN choice does not disable incoming notes.
Press Audio outputUses HOT or LINE output, with LINE reducing the master level by 10 dB when chosen on the SOUND menu.
Connect USB MIDISends chord, arpeggiator, chord-sequence, looper and drum-loop note events over USB MIDI on each track’s channel when USB is configured and its output queue has room.
Send factory yes in the USB serial consoleSending factory yes through the USB serial console immediately erases settings and calibration, all P1–P4/A–D projects, user sounds and the FM6 bank, then reboots without another question or undo while uploaded samples remain.

Shared slots and preset-save faults

P1 is PROJECT A, P2 is B, P3 is C and P4 is D. Saving from either interface replaces the same saved music; a synth PROJECT save leaves the separate chord settings unchanged. PRESETS shows the stored project’s name.

Saving P1 damages P2’s saved chord settings, P2 damages P3’s, and P3 damages P4’s, so loading the affected next preset can use default chord settings; there is no question or undo, and P4 also writes beyond its assigned working storage with effects that have not been established. The autosave packer has a related memory-write fault whose wider effects have not been established. Do not rely on these presets as a backup.

Save, record and back up

P1/A, P2/B, P3/C and P4/D share their saved music with synth PROJECT A–D, including key, scale and tempo but excluding keyboard octave, chord-sequence steps and looper recordings; their separate chord settings are unreliable because of the preset-save fault, and startup also replaces restored live chord settings with defaults.

A working v0.3 editor or backup route has not been established; the repository contains editor source, so record important settings and capture audio externally before switching rather than relying on Save backup or P1–P4.

If an editor is made operational and verified, its Restore backup asks once in the browser, then replaces included stored items, including empty slots, and loads the current synth project last without undo; interruption can leave a partial restore, and an older file without an FM6 bank leaves that bank unchanged.

Do not treat the looper’s recording indicator as proof that every note was kept: a layer silently drops later note events after its capacity is reached.

Looper capacity. Each layer holds up to 160 note-on or note-off events; once full, recording silently leaves later events out.

Looper lifetime. Chord looper recordings and chord sequencer steps live in working memory and are not part of P1–P4; record audio externally before switching off.

Leaving the chord sequencer. Changing mode while the chord sequence runs records one pass into a looper layer only when no loop exists and the current live layer is off; otherwise the sequence stops.

Arming and finishing a loop. The first recording starts on the second short REC press, finishes on the next press in FREE length or after the chosen bar count, and later armed layers start at the loop boundary; playback moves the live instrument to the lowest unused layer.

Speaker save. Changing SPEAKER alone does not trigger chord-state autosave; a separate settings save, such as leaving the hidden synth menu, is needed to keep it.

Recalled output level. OUT LEVEL is not reliably saved or recalled because its value falls outside the chord-settings block; choosing its row applies the output reduction, while preset recall does not apply that reduction.

MIDI input switch. MIDI IN changes the displayed choice but does not disable incoming MIDI notes, and its value lies outside the saved chord-settings block, so recall is unreliable.

OCT+ in the envelope or vibrato list. OCT+ unexpectedly loads P1 while the ENV or LFO list is open, replacing the active project and chord settings without a question or undo; use SELECT to choose within these lists.

What stopped means for flash writes. The save guard waits for the hidden synth transport and song order, but does not check the chord sequencer or chord looper; flash erases can briefly silence audio while those run.

Autosave memory fault. The same chord-settings packer overruns its temporary working storage during autosave; the wider effects of this memory fault have not been established.

Before you switch firmware

  • Back up first. A working v0.3 editor or backup route has not been established; the repository contains editor source, so record important settings and capture audio externally before switching rather than relying on Save backup or P1–P4.

Chord’s chord-preset and project saves, renames, sends to the FM-1 and restores, user-sound saves, renames, erases, sends to the FM-1 and restores, USR1 sample uploads, erases, slice edits and restores, and factory reset can also replace ChoralRoot’s legacy sounds 1–32, VA patches, FM6 patches 1–32, CZ patches 1–32 and FM TONE patches, kept for returning to ChoralRoot 0.21 or older.

Writes to shared storage can also remove other firmwares’ unfinished restores and pending updates; keep the original files.

See the switching advice in Before you switch firmware for the affected saved work. Back up with the firmware that made the work before installing or first starting fm1-chord; for chord itself, no working editor backup route is established, so write down important values and record audio externally. Other firmwares can overwrite its work at startup or automatically during use.

These are possible losses where the data is present and overlaps the write; unreadable foreign work receives no protective question, and an older surviving copy is not a backup.

P1/A, P2/B, P3/C and P4/D share their saved music with synth PROJECT A–D, including key, scale and tempo but excluding keyboard octave, chord-sequence steps and looper recordings; their separate chord settings are unreliable because of the preset-save fault, and startup also replaces restored live chord settings with defaults.

v0.2 compatibility has not been established, and no working v0.3 backup route is confirmed; record settings and audio before changing version, preserve any backup files already obtained, and keep earlier files separate.

  • Back up in the firmware you are leaving first, with its own tool (above). Anything below marked at risk can be written over; whether an older saved copy survives depends on how often you saved, so do not count on it.
  • What installing fm1-chord does to the firmware you had before.
    Show the detail

install (own update loader): Rewrites each differing program sector; does not touch the flash head. The incoming flash.bin must be at least 0x93000 bytes (not an exact-size requirement), and its app header must decrypt for this chip (accepted package; sectors are only erased when different). after successful install (own update loader): Clears valid update records after installing; saved projects, sounds and samples are not erased by this cleanup (After an install, erases only a 4 KiB sector whose last 256 bytes hold a valid update record (marker 0x5441 at +6 and a matching nonzero CRC16 over bytes 2..79): in practice the family staging-record sector 0xE4000 and, on a first install from stock, stock’s record sector 0xE8000. Saved music does not hold that record, so it is not at risk from the cleanup. This loader does not skip 0x97000–0xDFFFF). startup conditional cleanup: Erases all five sectors when the first 4 bytes at E0000 or the first 8 bytes at E4F00 contain anything nonblank, even foreign data. Not every startup writes (first-byte probe is nonblank). installer upgrade entry or failed package handling: A successful stage erases then programs the five-sector area; ANY ota_stage failure also calls ota_unstage, so even a refusal before staging can erase foreign data there. The host success reply is not an owner confirmation (installer upgrade command accepted by the running app). factory reset: Erases both copies of all 8 objects: settings and calibration, all 4 projects/chord presets, both 16-sound banks and FM6 bank; keeps uploaded samples and their slices. HOME+SAVE at startup must remain held through 3 s countdown; console factory yes calls the same eraser. No undo (hold HOME+SAVE through the startup countdown or send factory yes in console).

    • FM1 Move: At risk when you act: settings, panel calibration, four chord preset setups and the current chord setup; uploaded sample USR1 and optional SLICE markers; uploaded sample USR2 and optional SLICE markers; uploaded sample USR3 and optional SLICE markers; user sounds 1-16; user sounds 17-32. FM1 Move reads uploaded sample USR1 and optional SLICE markers until you write over the saved data. Slice marks set by hand are not loaded. Loop modes follow this firmware's playback rules. • FM1 Quest: At risk by itself: FM6 bank B1-B27; settings, panel calibration, four chord preset setups and the current chord setup. At risk when you act: chord preset P1: full synth project; chord preset P2: full synth project; chord preset P3: full synth project; chord preset P4: full synth project; uploaded sample USR1 and optional SLICE markers; uploaded sample USR2 and optional SLICE markers; uploaded sample USR3 and optional SLICE markers; user sounds 1-16; user sounds 17-32. Quest can play your saved USR1 until you write over it, if its audio and zones fit Quest’s smaller sample slot. Sending a sample to USR1 or erasing it loses the old sample. This includes holding REC on USR1 in IMPORTER when Quest can read it. Sending a sample to USR2 or erasing USR2 can damage the end of the old USR1. Back up USR1 first. FM1 Quest keeps stored but does not show user sounds 1-16 until you write over the saved data. Your sounds stay saved but cannot be shown or played. Saving into their slots removes them; saving elsewhere keeps them. Saving on the FM-1 needs another turn of the same control, with no warning that the slot holds a hidden sound. • Groove OS: Possibly at risk: settings, panel calibration, four chord preset setups and the current chord setup; chord preset P1: full synth project; chord preset P2: full synth project; chord preset P3: full synth project; chord preset P4: full synth project; user sounds 1-16; user sounds 17-32; FM6 bank B1-B27; uploaded sample USR1 and optional SLICE markers; uploaded sample USR2 and optional SLICE markers; uploaded sample USR3 and optional SLICE markers. The official route first puts V15 back, then installs Groove OS. Treat this firmware’s saved work as lost and back it up with its own tools before starting. Groove OS’s project saves, autosave, preferences, sample uploads and extra installed pages can also replace leftover work; nobody has published which parts of storage they use. A sound missing from PRESETS may still occupy storage, and do not count on Groove OS’s own backups to keep it.

Other firmwares reading fm1-chord's data: Felucca lists fm1-chord's user sounds 1-16; user sounds 17-32, but plays them differently (Only sounds this firmware can read will play. Saving into a slot it cannot read can replace it without an overwrite question. The other firmware’s extra instrument is unavailable here. • Every way each write can happen, for all mapped firmwares: the flash atlas's table.

First ordinary start, autosave and other settings writes

During first ordinary use or after a later chord edit, about three seconds of steady live state can cause an automatic settings write without an edit or question; closing the synth menu, first opening a shortcut layer, changing favourites, running calibration or sending preferences can write the same saved settings. See the switching advice in Before you switch firmware for the affected saved work.

P1–P4 saves and synth PROJECT A–D saves

P1–P4 saves replace the matching synth A–D project and write chord settings without a question, while synth PROJECT saves replace that same music after asking about a readable occupied slot; project-save commands from a host can also write it. See the switching advice in Before you switch firmware for the affected saved work. Saving P1 damages P2’s chord settings, P2 damages P3’s and P3 damages P4’s; P4 writes beyond its working storage, and no stored overwrite has panel undo.

User-sound saves, erase, rename and sends

Saving, erasing, renaming or sending a user sound rewrites its whole sixteen-sound bank; a panel question protects only a readable occupied target, so saving an empty slot can still rewrite other sounds, and removing a favourite can also write settings. See the switching advice in Before you switch firmware for the affected saved work. Imported banks can be written back with converted sounds, so returning to the original firmware may not recover their earlier sound; sloopDX sounds can already play through the wrong engine here, and separate FM6 companion voices are not recovered.

FM6 bank sends and erase

A host or operational editor can write or erase an FM6 bank patch, rewriting its containing bank without an on-unit question. See the switching advice in Before you switch firmware for the affected saved work.

Sample sends, uploads and clear

Sending or clearing an uploaded sample can erase its header and the affected audio sectors, with a full clear erasing the whole selected slot and no on-unit question. See the switching advice in Before you switch firmware for the affected saved work. How much is replaced depends on the chosen slot and upload length.

Editing saved sample slices

After leaving SLICES with the synth transport stopped, changed slice markers can erase the unused tail of a valid, sufficiently short uploaded sample without a question or undo. See the switching advice in Before you switch firmware for the affected saved work.

Conditional startup cleanup

At startup, data where the firmware checks its update area can cause that whole temporary update area to be erased without a question; other stored bytes alone do not trigger this cleanup. See the switching advice in Before you switch firmware for the affected saved work.

Installing or beginning an update

The installer writes the program area, and beginning an update from fm1-chord can erase its temporary update area even when the package is rejected, without an on-unit question. See the switching advice in Before you switch firmware for the affected saved work. After installation, the loader erases only a sector that holds a valid update record; saved projects, sounds and samples are not erased by this cleanup.

Installer cleanup only where an update record is recognized

After installation, the loader erases only a sector that holds a valid update record; saved projects, sounds and samples are not erased by this cleanup.

Factory reset from startup or the console

Holding HOME and SAVE through the startup countdown, or sending factory yes through the USB serial console, erases both copies of saved settings, all shared P1–P4/A–D projects, user-sound banks and the FM6 bank without undo; uploaded samples remain. See the switching advice in Before you switch firmware for the affected saved work.

Restore through a working host or editor

A working v0.3 editor route has not been established, but a compatible host can replace the settings, shared projects, sound banks, FM6 bank and samples included in a backup; the source browser editor asks once, then writes each included item, including empty slots, without an on-unit undo. See the switching advice in Before you switch firmware for the affected saved work. Interruption can leave a partial restore; a file without an FM6 bank leaves that bank unchanged, and the stored chord blocks retain their save faults.

Where the docs and the firmware disagree

  • Live state after power-off. Boot unpacks the stored live chord state, then initializes the chord engine again, replacing sounds, effects, modes, inversions and locks with defaults; key, scale, octave and tempo also reset, and explicit P1–P4 saves have a separate fault that can damage the next preset’s chord settings. The docs’ claim: The README says the settings return after power-off.
  • Sound count. The release’s selectable sound table has 38 entries, including PURE SINE and ACOUSTIC GTR. The docs’ claim: The README counts 37 sounds.
  • Modifier table count. The KEY menu cycles five tables: DEFAULT, EXTEND, CHROM, BORROW and OG. The docs’ claim: The README describes four modifier tables.
  • Early specification controls. The released chord interface uses menus and lists, SEQ opens LOOPER, SAVE opens PRESETS then saves on its next press, and OCT+ loads the selected slot; those held quick-selection gestures are not implemented. The docs’ claim: The design notes propose held SEL/FX/EDIT gestures, direct SEQ mode selection, ENV/LFO cycling, and tap-to-load or hold-to-save presets.
  • Early key layout and key lights. The released DEGREE layout starts the chord degrees on F3, reserves F4–G5 for strumming in chord modes, and lights keys white for held or latched keys; the screen provides the degree colors. The docs’ claim: The design notes place the tonic on C4 and propose degree colors on the key lights.
  • A held strumplate key during modifier changes. A direction press or release, or an INVERT or LOCK press, marks sounding keys for rebuilding, and that rebuild does not exclude held plate keys, so a held plate note can become a chord based on its own key’s degree. The docs’ claim: The strumplate is described as one chord note per key.
  • Locked chord roots follow the selected key. A lock retains chord quality and a relative root shift; the chord root is still built from the current key and scale. The docs’ claim: The early specification says a chord lock keeps the key in which it was made.
  • A held direction is applied twice immediately after locking. LOCK stores the changed quality and root offset, then the current direction is applied again while still held; DEFAULT UP can flip a locked minor chord back to major until UP is released, and root shifts can be doubled. The docs’ claim: The specification describes LOCK as retaining the changed chord.

Not established

  • Compatibility of saved v0.3 settings with v0.2 is not established; record important values and audio before changing version.
  • The wider effects of the preset-save and autosave memory faults have not been established.
  • A working v0.3 editor or backup route has not been established; the editor operations described here are present in source only.
