What Berlinan does

  • Berlinan is a generative Berlin School sequencer whose voices repeat, phase against each other on uneven loops and earn mutations.
  • The FM-1 makes no sound: each voice goes out on its own MIDI channel to your synthesizers over USB.
  • The ensemble holds two plucks, a bass, a pad, a lead, a drone and a heartbeat.
  • You play from the panel: voice keys mute and select, white keys move the harmony, other keys fire scenes and snapshots.
  • PRESETS picks the template, ALGORITHM picks the mode, EDIT re-rolls unlocked voices and OCT+ rolls a new seed.
  • MASTER is a density fader that thins the ensemble from full down to silence at the next bar.
  • SAVE keeps the project and six snapshot slots in memory, and OCT- undoes the last twenty states.
  • The FM-1 sends MIDI clock, Start and Stop over USB, or follows a clock from USB, the TRS jack or both.

Its modes

HOME: Perform
You watch the voice lanes, the horizon of coming changes and the convergence, and set tempo, the arranger, form and ambient mode.
ENV: Voice
You see the selected voice's strip, generation and lifecycle, and set its MIDI channel.
ARP: Pattern
You read the selected voice's pattern step by step and set the ratchet probability.
LFO: CC
You view the selected voice's controller lanes and the template's scenes.
SEQ: Arranger
You follow the arranger's phases, the bars to the next change and which voices are in.
FX: Delay
You read a note division and its time in milliseconds per voice for your own delays and echoes.
GLO: Setup
You set the root, the clock source and its input, and the lights, and read the seed.
