FM-1 firmware · Version 101
Baud Girl FM-1+VA
FM-1+VA keeps the FM-1's own FM synth and makes it much easier to play, then adds two engines: Virtual Analog (classic oscillators and filters) and 8-Bit (a chiptune kit of drums, sound effects, bass and lead). Every screen gives you four knobs you can point at anything, and the sequencer grows to 64 steps with chords, locks and chains. It suits players who liked the stock FM-1 and want it friendlier and more live, with the presets they already have.
- Turns it into
- The stock FM synth made friendlier, plus Virtual Analog and 8-Bit chiptune engines, four assignable knobs on every screen, a 64-step sequencer
- Best for
- Stock owners who want more without losing their presets; live playing; chiptune

Start here
FM-1+VA is closed source. Everything here comes from Madeline's own docs, not from code, and we haven't checked it on a unit.
How the panel thinks
- SELECT scrolls, ALGORITHM changes, SEL goes in, HOME comes back. That's the same on every list screen.
- KNOB 1-4 always play a "knob bank". Pick the bank once (Preset, one of the seven effects, Global or Mixer) and the knobs keep it on every screen.
- SAVE keeps everything. Turn PRESETS before saving and your changes to that preset are gone, with no question. Erasing, copying or resetting presets and clearing a pattern do ask first.
- The Sequencer and the Note Engine (ARP) can run together.
Play and pick sounds
| Do this | What happens |
|---|---|
| Turn PRESETS | The preset list opens and each preset plays as you land on it. On the sequencer's screens it changes without the list. |
| Turn ALGORITHM on HOME | The preset's basic character: the FM algorithm (with a diagram), the VA waveform, or the 8-Bit lead's wave. |
| Turn SELECT on HOME | Move the highlight between the four knob columns. |
| EDIT on an FM preset, then a labelled black key | F#3-F#4 (OP1-OP6) open an operator; hold one to switch that operator off. G#4 (PIT) pitch envelope, A#4 (GLO) top of the list, C#5 / D#5 (MONO / POLY) one note or several. |
| EDIT on an 8-Bit preset, then any key | Sounds that key's part and opens its settings. |
| 8-Bit preset at octave 0 | F3 to E5 play the bass, F5 to G5 the lead. OCT- down to -3 reaches the drums, -2 the sound effects. |
Patterns
| Do this | What happens |
|---|---|
| Hold PLAY | Sequencer on or off. The SEQ light flashes on the beat while it's on. |
| SEQ | The Pattern screen: 16 steps a page, a lane per part. SELECT picks a lane, SEL opens it, ALGORITHM turns pages. Set GLOBE > Sequencer View to Flow for all 64 steps as dots instead. |
| REC, then keys | Step recording: each key or chord is added to the outlined step and the outline moves on. Hold SEL to stay on the step. Play a note again on its step to remove it. |
| PLAY, then REC | Live recording: notes land on the nearest step. Hold SEL and a key to erase that note as it comes round. |
| Hold REC while playing keys | Long notes held into the next step. |
| In step recording: hold SEL, turn a knob | Lock that setting to the step (up to four per step). |
| In a lane: hold SEL, turn ALGORITHM / SELECT | Move the step's notes along the lane (dropped on notes, the two steps swap) / carry a copy (dropped on notes, it replaces them). |
| Hold SEL, turn PRESETS | Choose the next pattern (while one plays, it switches when that one comes round to the start). |
| SEQ again | The pattern's settings: length, timing, transpose, clear, chain, copy, time multiplier. |
Switching from your firmware
Pick the firmware on your FM-1 now to see what installing Baud Girl FM-1+VA does to its data.
1 · Back up first, on Stock V15
- Stock V15 has no way to back up your voices or patterns. The FM-1 only sends notes over MIDI, never voice data.
- One indirect way to back up, from Baud Girl's own docs (not tested by us): installing her FM-1+VA keeps your saved stock presets and patterns, and its browser Device Manager can then save all 128 presets and 16 patterns as files. FM-1+VA is closed source; install it at your own risk.
2 · What happens to your Stock V15 data
Possibly at risk
(the layout is reported or inferred, not read in code)
- stock settings (and possibly patterns)
- stock voices (128 user patches, banks A-D)
(weakest evidence: inferred)

Effects
| Do this | What happens |
|---|---|
| FX | Seven effects in the order the sound goes through them. |
| Turn ALGORITHM on an effect | On or off. (Or KNOB 4 on that effect's bank, from any screen.) |
| Hold SEL and turn SELECT | Move the effect up or down the chain; let go to drop it. |
| SEL on an effect | Its settings. |
What the lights mean
- FX, LFO, EDIT, GLO, HOME: lit while you're on their screen.
- ENV: lit while the preset's envelope is on. ARP: steady while the Note Engine is on.
- SEQ: flashes on the beat while the Sequencer is on. REC: flashes on the beat while recording live.
- Keys: light while their note sounds, whoever plays it. In step recording, only the outlined step's notes. In EDIT on an FM preset, the open operator is lit and the other operators that are on blink.
Before you switch firmware
- Back up first, while FM-1+VA is still installed. Her Device Manager (in the browser, over USB) saves two .syx files: all 128 presets, and all 16 patterns with their locks. It can't read an FM-1 running anything else, so do it before you install another firmware, stock included. Also back up before loading a DX7 bank, a preset pack or resetting a bank.
- Installing or updating FM-1+VA keeps your saved presets and patterns. Press SAVE first: anything unsaved is lost. Coming from stock, the global settings may reset; write them down.
- Going back to stock: her docs promise only that your saved presets stay. They say nothing about patterns (which can be 64 steps here and only 16 on stock), so keep the backup. Virtual Analog and 8-Bit presets won't play there, and FM-1+VA's settings go. Reinstall and they come back. You need M-VAVE's own file from its download page.
- Back up in the firmware you are leaving first, with its own tool (above). Anything below marked at risk can be written over; whether an older saved copy survives depends on how often you saved, so do not count on it.
- What installing Baud Girl FM-1+VA does to the firmware you had before. install (her web installer): Her docs: an installation keeps saved presets and patterns; coming from M-VAVE's firmware, the GLOBE settings may come back at factory values; unsaved changes are lost [vendor-doc].

Open’s sixteen USER projects and device preferences are likely to be lost when installing Baud Girl, and its sample bank is also at risk. Her installer and package footprint have not been read, so these losses remain possible rather than source-proven. Export all projects and device samples before leaving Open.
- FM-106: Possibly at risk (layout reported or inferred): older stored user bank, if present (Beta4 does not store new edits). A valid user bank stored by an earlier FM-106 build can still be present and readable in Beta4; the bank risks listed here, if any, apply if it exists. FM-106 Beta4’s new user-sound edits are only in memory: panel save, delete and librarian bank commit do not store them, even when they report success. Read the unit into the librarian and export both user banks before switching or powering off; those exports omit sequence notes, locks and extended controls.

- Who reads whose data. Other firmwares reading Baud Girl FM-1+VA's data: Stock V15 reads and uses Baud Girl FM-1+VA's Baud Girl presets (128) (her Virtual Analog and 8-Bit presets will not play on stock). What Baud Girl FM-1+VA reads of other firmwares' data: Baud Girl FM-1+VA reads and uses Stock V15's stock voices (128 user patches, banks A-D). Everything else of another firmware's looks empty or foreign to the reader.
- Every way each write can happen, for all mapped firmwares: the flash atlas's table. Read in each firmware's source (closed ones: their docs or third-party reports); nothing was tested on a unit.
- Coming to FM-1+VA from an open-source firmware: not documented either. Back that firmware up with its own editor first.
- On Version 93 or older? M-VAVE's own updater can't see the FM-1. Update FM-1+VA first.
Older videos show a different layout
Up to Version 94, SEQ switched the sequencer on and off, there was a drum grid, and an Overdub Rec setting. From Version 96, SEQ only shows the pattern, holding PLAY is the switch, the drum grid is gone and recording always adds.
