What Penumbra does

  • Five drone voices sit on the first black keys, each latched or swelling, thickened by a SWARM control.
  • The white keys play VOX, a four-voice synth locked to the scene's key with four sounds: GLASS, REED, HALO and LOW.
  • A deep kick tuned to the key and BLOOM, a slow swell, sit on their own black keys.
  • The looper records VOX, the kick and BLOOM in up to eight layers over sixteen bars, with undo and half or double speed.
  • Loops keep their notes as scale degrees, so the same tune plays on when you move to another scene.
  • Hold FX to throw shimmer, feedback, reverb freeze or a filter dip, and hold a white key to bend a note.
  • PRESET glides to the next scene over twelve seconds, while SELECT morphs toward it by hand.
  • Saving happens by itself after the sound goes quiet, keeping the journey, its sound, its loop and the settings.
