What fm_lab does

  • Eight voices of six-operator FM give you 32 algorithms, feedback, per-operator envelopes, keyboard scaling, a pitch envelope and the LFO.
  • Twenty factory voices start you off, and 32 user slots in flash hold your own sounds.
  • Each operator plays SINE, HALF SINE, ABS SINE, QUARTER, ALT SINE, CAMEL, SQUARE or SAW instead of only a sine.
  • The looper records one phrase of one, two or four bars, with overdub, a click and quantising.
  • The arpeggiator walks held chords with pattern, octave, latch, gate, rate, swing and velocity, sharing one clock with the looper.
  • Play 27 keys from F3 to G5, shift two octaves either way with OCT- and OCT+, and switch MONO or POLY.
  • A low pass, band pass or high pass filter sits before chorus, phaser, delay and reverb on the finished sound.
  • SAVE writes the voice to a user slot under a name you type, and DX7 SysEx banks load over USB.

Its modes

HOME
Play and listen while the knobs balance four operator levels or ratios at a time, stepping through three screens.
FILTER
Watch the live spectrum and set the filter's cutoff, resonance, type and span over it.
SCOPE
See the sound drawn as a waveform, locked to the note you are holding.
OPERATOR
Set one operator's level, ratio, detune, wave, mode, velocity sensitivity, amp mod and keyboard scaling.
ENVELOPE
Shape the selected operator's envelope as attack, decay, sustain and release, or as its four raw rates and levels.
LFO
Set speed, delay, wave, pitch and amp depth, pitch mod sensitivity and key sync.
GLOBAL
Choose the algorithm, feedback, oscillator key sync, transpose, the pitch envelope and the MIDI, oversampling and bit depth settings.
EFFECTS
Dial chorus, phaser, delay and reverb, one effect to a bank.
Step view
Edit the recorded phrase as a grid of steps, adding or removing notes with the keys.
