The fork names FoMni foundation commit 405ef41aef75f7e70afd6decc01505df07c708e9; it does not name a base release. FoMni v0.4 is a comparison for the storage layout, not an identified base version.

The modes

ModeHow to get there and what happens
StoppedPower on, or press PLAY while the loop runs. Keys play sounds, but the loop is stopped; stopping keeps its notes.
PlayingPress PLAY while stopped, or release REC briefly while recording. The single bar repeats through 16 sixteenth-note steps without adding live hits.
RecordingTap and release REC while stopped or playing. Live keyboard or channel 1 MIDI hits enter the nearest step while playback continues.
REC hold after clearKeep REC held for one second. The loop is erased and transport stopped; its caption lasts about 1.4 seconds, but the release guard remains active until this REC hold ends.
Hardware calibrationHold the physical OCT- and OCT+ buttons while powering on, then release them. Teach 14 button positions and seven clockwise encoder directions; completion saves calibration immediately, without a question or panel undo, while 30 seconds of inactivity at a prompt abandons the changes without writing.
Update countdownHold OCT- and OCT+ during normal operation. A countdown appears after two seconds; holding past five seconds enters the chip updater, while letting either button go cancels the countdown.
Package updateStart an update from the connected installer. The musical UI pauses while the package and loader are checked and staged; a successful commit restarts the unit and loses its RAM loop.
Chip update modeHold OCT- and OCT+ past five seconds, or send the USB recovery request. Sound stops and the unit enters the chip updater; normal panel music controls no longer run.
Safe modeTwo failed starts enter this mode automatically. Audio and the musical UI are off, but the release’s Python installer can reinstall over USB despite the screen’s web-installer prompt; PLAY retries startup after the first half second.
StartupSwitch the unit on. A splash appears before normal play; a retained crash report can add a brief restart notice.
Crash reportA firmware fault opens this screen automatically. Sound stops, a red fault screen appears, and the unit restarts after about four seconds.

There is one music screen, with stopped, playing and recording states; FX, SEL, HOME and the other unused buttons do not open pages. No held button adds a musical modifier layer. Service screens pause or bypass the musical UI; the update countdown alone leaves normal play available.

Play the sounds

Do thisWhat happens
Press any key while stopped or playingTriggers its sound once at full velocity without changing the loop.
Press a key while recordingSounds immediately and enters the nearest loop step at full velocity; a second hit of the same sound on that step replaces its velocity.
Hold or release a keyHolding does not retrigger it; releasing does not shorten it.

The eleven sounds repeat chromatically across all 27 keys; OCT- and OCT+ do not transpose them. The key names below identify physical positions, not sample pitches.

Eight sample voices can overlap; a further hit replaces the oldest sounding voice. This does not erase the hit stored in a loop step. Different sounds can share a step, and repeated copies of a sound on the keyboard share its single stored hit per step.

Record and run the loop

Do thisWhat happens
PLAY while stoppedStarts the existing loop at step 1 without enabling recording.
PLAY while playingStops playback and silences voices and effect tails while keeping the loop notes.
PLAY while recordingStops playback and overdubbing and silences voices and effect tails while keeping the loop notes.
Press RECStarts timing the hold without changing recording until release or the one-second clear threshold.
Release REC before one second while stoppedAfter a hold shorter than one second, starts recording at step 1 without clearing the existing RAM loop.
Release REC before one second while playingAfter a hold shorter than one second, enables overdubbing without restarting the loop.
Release REC before one second while recordingAfter a hold shorter than one second, stops adding hits while loop playback continues.
Keep REC held for one secondAt one second, erases every hit in the RAM loop and stops and silences playback without a question or undo, keeping tempo and effects.
Release REC after clearingReleasing the REC hold that cleared the loop leaves recording off.
Turn SELECTSets loop tempo from 40 to 240 BPM in one-BPM steps, starting at 120 after each restart.

The loop is one bar of sixteen sixteenth notes. Hits round to the nearest step. A hit rounded ahead sounds live now and skips that next playback boundary; it joins normal playback on the following circuit. Existing hits stay when you stop or start recording again. Tempo and effects stay unchanged by a loop clear. Neither short nor long REC gestures offer an undo.

Coming from another firmware

Pick the firmware on your FM-1 now to see what installing Fart Machine One does to its data.

1 · Before you switch, back up on Stock V15

  • Back up first. Keep the DX7 .syx banks you loaded so you can send them again (a bank arrives over MIDI SysEx and you pick A-D). Another route: installing Baud Girl’s FM-1+VA keeps your saved stock presets, and its Device Manager can then save all 128 presets as a .syx file. FM-1+VA is closed source; install it at your own risk. It is unknown whether stock's 16 patterns come through or can then be backed up. Write down patterns you care about. To come back, you need M-VAVE's own V15 file from its download page; the installers check it byte for byte. Stock V15’s automatic pattern saves and SAVE writes may also replace ChoralRoot’s legacy sounds 1–32, VA patches, FM6 patches 1–32, CZ patches 1–32 and FM TONE patches, kept for returning to ChoralRoot 0.21 or older. Stock V15’s write locations are uncertain. Stock V15 has no backup of its own; it sends notes over MIDI, never voice data.

2 · What happens to your Stock V15 data

Possibly at risk

  • stock settings (and possibly patterns)

(Fart Machine One does not import or save a music setup or loop. SAVE does nothing. Its recorded loop, tempo and effect choices last only while it stays on. Calibration is separate.)

(At start-up, Fart Machine One erases the space where firmware updates are prepared if a checked spot there holds data. This can erase stock data in that space. The exact locations of stock saved data are only reported.)

What we checked for

  • The file is exactly the one its author published
  • It's the same file we saw when this release first came out
  • It opens cleanly as an FM-1 firmware, nothing damaged
  • It doesn't show up on your computer as a keyboard, mouse or other input device
  • It doesn't show up as a USB drive or network adapter
  • Its text mentions no computer command tools, like PowerShell, Terminal or a download command

What we found

  • MIDI and audio, as expected

Not checked yet

  • Its update loader, the part that writes the firmware onto your FM-1. A person hasn't reviewed it yet.
  • What it does while it's running. We read the file; we don't run it.
  • Whether the file was built from its published source code.

StatusScanned, nothing harmful found

Les has mapped its controls for V1.0.0. V1.1.0 is out.

Les scans every firmware here whose file is public, and shows what it checked and what it found. A scan lowers the risk; it can't rule it out. This firmware is made by its author, not by Les or M-VAVE. Back up first, and install at your own risk. How Les scans firmware

Add effects and set volume

Do thisWhat happens
Turn KNOB 1Changes the reverb amount from 0 to 100 percent in one-point steps, starting at 15 percent.
Turn KNOB 2Changes the delay amount from 0 to 100 percent in one-point steps, starting at zero.
Turn KNOB 3Changes delay time from 80 to 500 milliseconds in ten-millisecond steps, starting at 240 milliseconds.
Turn KNOB 4Changes delay feedback from 0 to 70 percent in one-point steps, starting at 25 percent.
Turn MASTERSets the output volume, including the audio sent over USB.
Turn an encoder while holding any buttonIts normal job, range and step size stay the same; REC and the OCT pair still perform their own hold actions.

Effect values remain visible under the cartoon. Restarting restores 15% reverb, no delay, 240 ms delay time, 25% feedback and 120 BPM.

Know which controls are unused

Do thisWhat happens
Press or hold FX, SEL, ENV, LFO, EDIT, GLO, HOME, SAVE, ARP or SEQNo musical action or modifier layer.
Press or hold one OCT button aloneNo musical action; both together are used for recovery.
Turn ALGORITHM or PRESETS, including with a button heldNo musical action.
Hold PLAY after its initial pressNo extra repeat or modifier action.

SAVE does not save anything. There is no preset selection, step-edit page, separate pattern slot or song mode.

Connect MIDI and USB audio

Do thisWhat happens
Send MIDI notes 53–79 on channel 1 through USB or MIDI INPlays the corresponding physical-key sound at the incoming velocity; recording adds it to the loop.
Send note-off or a zero-velocity noteDoes not shorten the sample.
Send channel 1 CC120 or CC123Stops playback and recording, silences voices and effect tails, and clears the visual puffs while retaining loop notes.
Send MIDI clock, start, continue or stopNo transport or tempo response.
Connect USB audio to a computerCaptures the master output as stereo 16-bit audio at 44.1 kHz.

There is no MIDI note output implemented by the playback engine. USB also carries identity, install and recovery traffic.

Read the screen and lights

What you seeWhat it means
STOPShows the cartoon, the last triggered sound or initial key prompt, four effect values, and STOP with tempo.
PLAYShows the cartoon reacting to live and loop hits, their sound names, four effect values, tempo and the current step out of 16.
RECShows REC with tempo and current step beneath the animated cartoon, sound name and four effect values.
LOOP CLEAREDShows LOOP CLEARED and READY TO RECORD for about 1.4 seconds after the one-second REC hold.
Green PLAY lampSteady during playback without recording.
Red/orange PLAY lamp and REC lampSteady while recording; the green PLAY lamp is off.
Transport lamps offStopped, including after a loop clear.
Other button lampsDark, with no dim glow.
Key lampsHeld keys and active sample voices, not reverb or delay tails. Recorded playback uses each sound’s first copy among F3–D#4, even when you recorded a later copy.

The playing and recording lamps do not flash a beat or show sequencer positions. A recorded playback hit updates the cartoon and sound caption just like a live hit.

Calibrate or recover the unit

Do thisWhat happens
Hold both physical OCT buttons while powering on, then releaseOpens HARDWARE CALIBRATION.
Follow the button promptsTeaches FX, SEL, ENV, LFO, EDIT, GLO, HOME, SAVE, ARP, SEQ, PLAY, REC, OCT-, then OCT+.
Follow the clockwise encoder promptsTeaches SELECT, ALGORITHM, PRESETS, then KNOB 1–4; the last turn attempts to save the whole learned map immediately without a question or panel undo.
Wait 30 seconds without answering a calibration promptAbandons pending changes and keeps the previous map, without writing it.
Use note keys or MASTER during calibrationDoes not answer a calibration prompt.
Hold both OCT buttons during normal play for 5 sWith the other OCT button also held past five seconds, stops sound and enters the chip updater without a panel confirmation or saving the RAM loop.
Release either OCT button before updater entryCancels the countdown.
If startup fails twiceSafe mode keeps USB available and disables sound; use the release’s Python installer to reinstall, or press PLAY after its first half second to restart.
Start an installer updateThe screen reports package, loader, confirmation and restart stages, or failure; completion restarts the unit and loses the RAM loop.

In Safe Mode, the screen’s web-installer direction is inherited. Use the Python tool from the matching release instead: with USB connected and its installer dependencies ready, run python tools/fm1_install.py fart-machine-one.fwsc from the release folder. The retained browser page is for FoMni; this map does not establish a Fart browser recovery route.

Calibration does not report whether the flash write succeeded; a newly learned map can work for the current session even if it was not saved. The startup splash says FMO. A new retained crash can show a restart notice for about 2.5 seconds. A fault screen shows FMO CRASH on red and restarts after about four seconds. Recovery entry briefly shows UBOOT or UBOOT (USB); screens inside the proprietary chip updater are outside this map. If safe mode also repeatedly fails, four failed starts send the unit to the chip updater.

Save, load and back up

The loop, tempo and effect settings live only while the firmware runs; power-off, a restart or installing another version loses them, and SAVE does not keep them.

The only saved user object is hardware calibration. Completing every prompt replaces its saved control map immediately; timeout writes nothing. No musical page, autosave or shutdown save exists.

There is no loop, effects or calibration export or restore tool in this release; record the sound over USB audio or the audio output before restarting if you want to keep a performance, and note your tempo and effect values separately.

Before you switch firmware

  • Back up first. There is no loop, effects or calibration export or restore tool in this release; record the sound over USB audio or the audio output before restarting if you want to keep a performance, and note your tempo and effect values separately.

Fart does not read or save FoMni’s stored setup, so it leaves that setup untouched in ordinary use; it can read FoMni’s saved calibration and rewrites the shared calibration only if you complete calibration.

Installing this release writes the program and clears sectors recognized as pending update records. A startup that finds data in either checked region erases the whole update area without asking, including before Safe Mode, and can destroy another firmware’s saved work. Fart checks two small regions in the area used to stage updates; if either is not blank, it erases that entire area without checking whose data is there. An installer session started from Fart erases the same area even when the update fails or is refused. Ordinary playing, effect changes, SAVE, a loop clear and power-off do not write a musical setup. Calibration is saved only when you complete it. Completing hardware calibration can also replace ChoralRoot’s legacy sounds 1–16, kept for returning to ChoralRoot 0.21 or older.

See the switching advice in this section for the affected saved work. A pending X0X or Polly restore by itself does not trigger startup cleanup, but the information is erased if another occupied check region triggers cleanup or an installer session begins. Back up in the firmware you are leaving before switching.

This map establishes no earlier Fart release format; the RAM loop and effects cannot survive a version change, and whether a different version accepts the saved calibration needs that version’s source.

Back up in the firmware you are leaving. See the switching advice in this section.

  • Back up in the firmware you are leaving first, with its own tool (above). Anything below marked at risk can be written over; whether an older saved copy survives depends on how often you saved, so do not count on it.
  • What installing Fart Machine One does to the firmware you had before.
    Show the detail

install (supplied update loader): For each program sector, skip equal bytes or erase, write and verify the incoming sector; flash head below 0x4000 is not written. Saved musical data above the program range is not part of this program pass (valid package and matching chip encryption key). install (supplied loader record cleanup): After installation, clear only valid update-record sectors. Ordinary saved projects, sounds and samples are not update records (After an install, erase only a 4 KiB sector whose last 256 bytes hold a valid update record (marker 0x5441 at +6 and a matching nonzero CRC16 over bytes 2..79): in practice the family staging-record sector 0xE4000 and, on a first install from stock, stock record sector 0xE8000. Saved music does not hold that record. This loader does not skip 0x97000-0xDFFFF). every application start, including Safe Mode: At each application start, including before Safe Mode, if any byte in E0000..E0003 or E4F00..E4F07 is not FF, erase all five sectors E0000..E4FFF. Requires the expected JEDEC flash ID. Neither ownership nor valid staged-loader structure is checked. Other occupied bytes alone do not trigger cleanup (one of the update staging probes is not blank). first start and ordinary play: No project or effects flash read or save: project_load only fills effect defaults, om_init creates an empty RAM loop at 120 BPM, and the UI has no save handler. panel_init only reads calibration or keeps RAM/defaults. No settings migration or first-start setup save (all ordinary starts; calibration only writes if owner completes it). update request while Fart is running: Receive an installer upgrade request. Accepted package staging erases all five sectors, writes incoming loader body, checks its CRC and readback, then commits its JLFS header. After the host success reply, write and read-check the resume record and reset. A failed or refused OTA session calls ota_unstage and erases all five sectors even when validation failed before staging began; there is no device-side question (installer upgrade request received in normal play or Safe Mode). completed power-on calibration: Writes only one 4-KiB calibration copy according to the A/B rule; does not erase both sectors at once. Timeouts restore prior RAM map without a write. Save failure is not reported by the calibration UI (all 14 buttons and seven encoders have been learned). optional Mac rescue tool restoring stock V15: After a raw whole-flash dump, rewrites only program sectors different from hash-approved stock V15, high to low, verifies final whole-flash read against stock image plus the old tail, then restarts. Differences in the protected head abort before writes. This installs stock; it does not restore the raw dump or write the saved-data tail (--write supplied; this bypasses the --ask callback even if both flags are supplied). optional Mac rescue tool restoring stock V15: After a raw whole-flash dump, rewrites only program sectors different from hash-approved stock V15, high to low, verifies final whole-flash read against stock image plus the old tail, then restarts. Differences in the protected head abort before writes. This installs stock; it does not restore the raw dump or write the saved-data tail (--ask supplied without --write and owner types yes after backup and checks).

    • Stock V15: Possibly at risk: stock settings (and possibly patterns). Fart Machine One does not import or save a music setup or loop. SAVE does nothing. Its recorded loop, tempo and effect choices last only while it stays on. Calibration is separate. At start-up, Fart Machine One erases the space where firmware updates are prepared if a checked spot there holds data. This can erase stock data in that space. The exact locations of stock saved data are only reported.

    • MAKU: Nothing shared.
    • fm1-chord: At risk when you act: learned button and encoder calibration.
    • SLOOP DX7 Banks: At risk when you act: learned button and encoder calibration.
    • FuMi-1: Carried over: learned button and encoder calibration.
    • Jangada: At risk when you act: learned button and encoder calibration.
    • WaveLoop FM-1: At risk when you act: learned button and encoder calibration.
    • ORBIT: At risk when you act: learned button and encoder calibration.
    • SLOOP Floyd FM: At risk when you act: learned button and encoder calibration.
    • winampFM Synth: At risk when you act: learned button and encoder calibration.
    • Bubba Machine (beta): At risk by itself: learned button and encoder calibration.
    • Felucca [Salt]: At risk when you act: learned button and encoder calibration.
    • PIGEON: At risk when you act: learned button and encoder calibration.
    • FM1 Move: At risk when you act: learned button and encoder calibration.
    • FM1 Quest: At risk when you act: learned button and encoder calibration.
    • Groove OS: Possibly at risk: learned button and encoder calibration. The official route first puts V15 back, then installs Groove OS. Treat this firmware’s saved work as lost and back it up with its own tools before starting. Groove OS’s project saves, autosave, preferences, sample uploads and extra installed pages can also replace leftover work; nobody has published which parts of storage they use. A sound missing from PRESETS may still occupy storage, and do not count on Groove OS’s own backups to keep it.
  • Who reads whose data. Other firmwares reading Fart Machine One's data: FoMni reads and uses Fart Machine One's learned button and encoder calibration; FuMi-1 reads and uses Fart Machine One's learned button and encoder calibration; FiMba-1 beta reads and uses Fart Machine One's learned button and encoder calibration; AMB-1 reads and uses Fart Machine One's learned button and encoder calibration; Polly reads and uses Fart Machine One's learned button and encoder calibration. What Fart Machine One reads of other firmwares' data: Fart Machine One reads and uses FoMni's FoMni button calibration; Fart Machine One reads and uses AMB-1's AMB-1 panel calibration; Fart Machine One reads and uses Polly's Polly button and encoder calibration; Fart Machine One reads and uses FiMba-1 beta's FiMba-1 beta panel calibration; Fart Machine One reads and uses FuMi-1's FuMi-1 button and encoder calibration. Everything else of another firmware's looks empty or foreign to the reader.

Where the docs and the firmware disagree

The Safe Mode screen directs you to a web installer, while the install guide uses the release’s Python tool and says no separate browser installer is necessary. Safe Mode accepts that Python tool over USB; use the reinstall command above. The browser page retained in this tree is FoMni-branded.

The current README’s musical controls agree with the source. The retained FoMni guide describes a different instrument: its chord pages, modifier keys and autosave do not apply here. The Fart README mentions calibration and recovery without listing their full gestures.

The closed parts

The map does not claim that the named FoMni base commit is the supplied v0.4 release.

Mapped from adamcharleswilsonmusic-code/Fart-Machine-One at V1.0.0 (784347a), 2026-10-17. Each control’s source is pinned in [fart.json](fart.json). An independent checker found zero errors in round 3 (2026-10-17). Code: GPL-3.0-only, by adamcharleswilsonmusic-code (credited as Adam), with retained FoMni and Felucca platform credits. Bundled AC79 SDK files use Apache-2.0. The eleven recordings use separate terms; the release’s notices do not establish their licences or permission to redistribute as verified. This guide uses its own wording and contains no copied tables or artwork. It is independent of the firmware author and M-VAVE.
