What brutal-fm does
- Four-operator FM runs through a 4x4 modulation matrix with self-feedback, two-way cross FM and negative modulation.
- Four character modes, METAL, GROWL, CHAOS and NOISE, push the same core toward bells, bass, runaway feedback or glitch.
- The MORPH knob sweeps continuously between sound A and sound B, routing included, without changing pitch.
- COMPLEX ARP builds a fixed 8 or 16 step pattern from only the notes you hold, and keeps looping it.
- HOLD, FREEZE, RHYTHM LOCK, PITCH LOCK, TIMBRE LOCK, REGENERATE and UNDO let you reshape that pattern while it plays.
- Forty factory presets and thirty-two user slots live on the FM-1, and saved presets return at startup.
- USB MIDI and TRS MIDI in take notes, CC, Program Change and clock, while USB audio records your playing.
Its modes
- PERFORM
- Play and shape the current sound with MORPH, INTENS, FEEDBK and MOVE on the four knobs.

- ARP LOCKS
- Switch HOLD, FREEZE, RHYTHM LOCK and PITCH LOCK on and off.
- SEQ STEPS
- Edit a generated pattern one step at a time: note, gate length and FM offset.

- Set each operator's ratio, fine tune, level and output, the modulation matrix, fixed frequencies and phase reset.
- ENV
- Shape attack, decay, sustain and release for each of the four operators.
- LFO
- Set the LFO shape and rate, the DRIFT destinations, vibrato, velocity, bend, glide and poly or mono voicing.
- FX
- Dial in the wavefolder, DRIVE, CRUSH and DELAY, and pick the METAL, GROWL, CHAOS or NOISE mode.
- GLO
- Handle sync and tempo, MIDI channel and CC assignments, audio quality, voice count and the A/B sound tools.
- SAVE
- Pick a user slot, type a name and press SAVE again to write the preset.
What Les checked
brutal-fm v0.1.5Scanned October 31, 2026
What we checked for
- The file is exactly the one its author published
- It's the same file we saw when this release first came out
- It opens cleanly as an FM-1 firmware, nothing damaged
- It doesn't show up on your computer as a keyboard, mouse or other input device
- It doesn't show up as a USB drive or network adapter
- Its text mentions no computer command tools, like PowerShell, Terminal or a download command
What we found
- MIDI and audio, as expected
- A serial port, which many FM-1 firmwares keep for debugging. It can't type into your computer.
