What SPELLBOX does
- SPELLBOX turns the FM-1 into a talking spelling toy with a vintage ten coefficient LPC voice at 8 kHz.
- Five word games run in English across four levels, chosen with PRESETS and set with SELECT.
- SING and LETTER SYNTH make the keyboard an instrument where words and letters are sung at each key's pitch.
- Held keys sustain the vowel, OCT- and OCT+ shift the octave, and both modes also respond to MIDI.
- SPEAK pronounces anything you type, using a twelve thousand word dictionary, common endings, then letter to sound rules.
- The VOICE page sets pitch, speed, chip clock and speaker tone, while the BEND page adds corrupted coefficients, stutter, flat intonation and bit crushing.
- GLO switches all the BEND effects on or off at once, and MASTER sets the volume.
- SAVE keeps the level, the settings and the chosen letter, and the vocabulary holds a hundred words of up to eight letters.
Its modes
- SPELL
- The box says a word, you type it on the alphabetical keyboard and press ENTRÉE, scoring over ten words.
- LETTER
- Every key speaks and shows its own letter.
- SAY IT
- A word appears for you to say aloud, then ENTRÉE plays it and later you spell the same words.
- SECRET CODE
- Type a word and ENTRÉE swaps each letter for its opposite, and coding again decodes it.
- MYSTERY WORD
- Guess the hidden word letter by letter with seven mistakes allowed, tried letters staying lit.
- SING
- The keys become notes and sing the chosen word at each pitch, holding the vowel while you hold the key.
- LETTER SYNTH
- Each key sings its own letter at its pitch, or SELECT puts one letter across the whole keyboard.
- SPEAK
- Type words with OCT+ for space and REC to erase, then ENTRÉE speaks them aloud.
- VOICE
- Set PITCH, SPEED, the chip CLOCK and speaker TONE under HOME.
- BEND
- Set BEND, STUTTER, MONO and CRUSH under ENV for circuit bent sounds.
