What Del Rio does

  • Six hand percussion instruments play from the black keys with their real strokes, and harder playing is louder.
  • The white keys are a step sequencer: each press puts the next stroke on that step, then none.
  • PLAY loops the rhythm and REC records your black key playing onto the nearest step, over what is there.
  • 39 rhythms sit in groups by beats, chosen with ALGORITHM and PRESETS, each group holding a FREE rhythm of your own.
  • FX swaps the kit for the berimbau with its toques, or for the tanpura and shruti box drones, both synthesised live.
  • Each instrument's SOUND page offers only what a player can really change, such as djembe tuning or cajon snare wires.
  • SEQ taps the tempo, OCT\u2212 and OCT+ nudge it, SEL mutes and EDIT twice clears.
  • SAVE keeps your settings and rhythms in the FM-1's flash, and USB powers the FM-1 and names it FM-1 DelRio.

Its modes

The kit
Play djembe, cajon, udu, clapsticks, maracas and triangle together on the black keys and sequence them on the white keys.
The berimbau
Play the berimbau and its caxixi alone, with toques such as ANGOLA, SB REGIONAL and CAVALARIA.
TANPURA
Hold a four string drone with jawari buzz, setting Sa from a key and its character from PRESETS.
SHRUTI
Hold reed chords or single notes while the bellows breathe back and forth in time.
SOUND page
Set each instrument's level and its own few real controls on large sliders.
