FM-1 firmware · v0.9-salt14

Felucca [Salt]

Salt turns the FM-1 into three synth parts plus a GM drum track, with nine engines, 64-step patterns, an arp and effects. It suits playing layered sounds and recording short pieces, with favorites and USB or TRS MIDI clock. Chance Roth’s fork comes from Felucca before version 1.0; later Felucca controls do not apply here. This release is a beta.

What it is
A four-track synth with nine engines, General MIDI drums, patterns up to 64 steps, favourites and USB or TRS clock
Best for

Start here

This guide comes from reading the pinned release source, without testing a unit. The printed SEL button opens SCL; ALGORITHM selects the track. The encoders turn but do not press. Specific page or track rules below take precedence over the normal-page defaults.

The modes

A family button recalls its last page; pressing it again moves to the next page in that group. HOME returns directly to the waveform page. The engine rows name the same HOME and EDIT pages for each sound engine.

PortWhat happens
TRS MIDI INReceives notes, pitch bend, mod wheel, sustain and reset messages, routing synth channels 1–3 to their parts, the configured drum channel to drums and other channels to the selected track, while clock and transport follow this port only with CLK at TRS.
USB-CExchanges USB MIDI notes and controllers with a host and carries the connected editor and firmware updates over the same cable.

The four-knob page table below includes sound browsing, engine choice and favorites. An empty Favorites list leaves the current sound loaded; return LIST to ALL to find more sounds.

Play notes and enter steps

The keyboard has 27 keys, F3–G5 at the default octave. Each note plays the selected synth track at velocity 100, sends USB MIDI, and records into an armed track while playback runs. The keys still play in menus and clear questions. Notes follow octave, transpose, scale and arp settings except for the special drum mappings below.

Releasing a sounding key sends USB MIDI note-off to the track where it began, even after changing tracks. Arp HOLD or a matching held MIDI note can keep it sounding. WHITE-silent keys send no note-on or note-off.

With SCL > QNT at SNAP, every chromatic key rounds down into the selected scale. With WHITE, only white keys play, walking through the scale with C4 as root; black keys are silent. This also applies to step entry and recording. Track 4 and SAMPLE’s GM kit keep their own mappings.

On STEP, the first non-silent note replaces the cursor step, and held notes form up to a four-note chord in POLY; other voice modes keep the latest note. This happens even with REC unarmed or playback running. The keys sound too. After a non-silent note opens an entry, releasing all physical keys advances the cursor. EDIT immediately clears the step and advances without a question or undo. Project SAVE stores full patterns; USER SAVE stores the reduced pattern described below.

Coming from another firmware

Pick the firmware on your FM-1 now to see what installing Felucca [Salt] does to its data.

1 · Before you switch, back up on Stock V15

  • Back up first. Keep the DX7 .syx banks you loaded so you can send them again (a bank arrives over MIDI SysEx and you pick A-D). Another route: installing Baud Girl’s FM-1+VA keeps your saved stock presets, and its Device Manager can then save all 128 presets as a .syx file. FM-1+VA is closed source; install it at your own risk. It is unknown whether stock's 16 patterns come through or can then be backed up. Write down patterns you care about. To come back, you need M-VAVE's own V15 file from its download page; the installers check it byte for byte. Stock V15’s automatic pattern saves and SAVE writes may also replace ChoralRoot’s legacy sounds 1–32, VA patches, FM6 patches 1–32, CZ patches 1–32 and FM TONE patches, kept for returning to ChoralRoot 0.21 or older. Stock V15’s write locations are uncertain. Stock V15 has no backup of its own; it sends notes over MIDI, never voice data.

KNOB 1–4 edit the four columns on screen. Blank columns do nothing. The engine-specific rows replace the generic HOME/EDIT rows; on unsupported sound pages with track 4 selected, DRUM TRACK appears and the four knobs do nothing. TOOLS still lets you clear its pattern, but cannot initialize its sound.

Save, load and back up

There is no pattern autosave, power-off save or panel undo. USER SAVE stores a sound plus a reduced 16-step, one-note pattern; PROJECT SAVE stores the four-track session. A first right turn arms an action and a second within about 1.5 seconds performs it, including over data Salt cannot read. No extra overwrite dialog follows. Menu exit and favourite changes save preferences automatically when their saved representation differs.

On USER, choose U01–U32 with KNOB 1; KNOB 2 loads, KNOB 3 erases a readable used sound, and KNOB 4 saves. Load keeps the mix and an edited pattern, but an empty or untouched preset pattern can be replaced, with its saved length, division, swing and gate. USER SAVE omits step velocities, steps after 16 and extra chord notes. Save or erase writes the complete sixteen-sound bank, even when only one slot changes; unreadable records in other slots survive as bytes when the bank itself loaded correctly. There is no panel naming page.

On PROJECT, choose 1–4 with KNOB 1; KNOB 3 stops playback and loads the whole session, losing unsaved work; KNOB 4 immediately saves the four tracks and shared values. The first clockwise turn arms the action; a second within about 1.5 seconds acts, without a further question or undo.

Back up with the firmware that made the work before installing or first starting Salt. Refresh the connected editor before Save to file: it exports the cached selected track’s parameters, shared values and 64 steps, but Load file ignores the exported shared values and does not restore other tracks, saved project slots, preferences or samples. Export bank reads each readable used user sound from the unit; importing adds the sounds to the browser library, from which you send each to a chosen unit slot. Library Export only downloads the browser’s existing library. Keep original sample files: Salt has no sample export or complete-device backup.

Sample upload and erase ask in the supplied editor, then write immediately without undo. Each sample slot accepts at most 16 files or zones; additional dropped files are ignored. An upload whose audio exceeds the slot capacity is refused. Starting an accepted upload invalidates the old slot before the replacement finishes, so a failed upload can leave it unusable.

Normal pagesSAVED (RAM) or ERASED (RAM) means the change has no flash copy and will not survive power-off.
Fault screenShows crash details on red, stops audio and restarts after about four seconds; two consecutive starts that fail within their first 30 seconds send the next start to the USB boot updater instead of Salt.
Normal pagesSAVE ERROR or ERASE ERROR means the flash operation or its verification failed, so a durable result is unconfirmed and an older flash copy may already have been erased.
Normal pagesEMPTY SLOT means the chosen project or user sound is empty or unreadable, so the requested load or user-sound erase was not performed.
Normal pagesAGAIN names the armed action: turn that knob right again within about 1.5 seconds to perform it, or wait for it to expire without acting.
Installer updateUPDATE shows PACKAGE, LOADER, CONFIRM and RESTART, adds CHECK HEAD for an official-firmware package, or shows FAILED with a negative error number; CONFIRM is host confirmation without an on-unit question.
USB-requested update modeUBOOT (USB) appears after a host request stops audio and before the unit enters its USB boot updater.
Early-start recoveryAfter two consecutive starts fail within their first 30 seconds, the next start enters the USB boot updater before drawing a Salt page.

Before you switch firmware

  • Back up first.
  • Back up in the firmware you are leaving first, with its own tool (above). Anything below marked at risk can be written over; whether an older saved copy survives depends on how often you saved, so do not count on it.
  • What installing Felucca [Salt] does to the firmware you had before.
    Show the detail

install using supplied loader: Checks the package and unit identity, then replaces and verifies changed program data. It leaves the startup code alone. This loader accepts oversized packages without requiring an exact size (accepted package and matching key). installer finish: update-record cleanup: After installation, removes only valid update records. Saved music does not meet that check (Erases only a 4 KiB sector whose last 256 bytes hold a valid update record: marker 0x5441 at +6 and a matching nonzero CRC16 over bytes 2..79. In practice this is 0xE4000 and, on a first install from stock, 0xE8000. Saved music does not hold that record). application start: On the expected 1 MiB memory, startup clears the temporary update room without asking if it detects leftover data at either place it checks. Data elsewhere in that room alone does not trigger the clearing, but can be erased with it (one of its update-area probes is not blank). first ordinary start: Reads settings, four projects, two user-sound banks and three sample slots. Does not save settings merely because absent/converted, and has no project autosave. Starts an empty default working session. Calibration writes only on owner entry; first menu close and favourite changes can write settings without a save action (ordinary first start). OTA request while Salt is running: Requesting an update while Salt runs can clear the temporary update room. Failed or refused attempts can clear it even before any new data arrives (host upgrade request, whether accepted or later rejected).

    • FM1 Quest: At risk by itself: screen preferences, calibration and favourites. At risk when you act: project 1; project 2; project 3; project 4; user sample USR1; user sample USR2; user sample USR3; user sounds U01-U16; user sounds U17-U32. Quest can play your saved USR1 until you write over it, if its audio and zones fit Quest’s smaller sample slot. Sending a sample to USR1 or erasing it loses the old sample. This includes holding REC on USR1 in IMPORTER when Quest can read it. Sending a sample to USR2 or erasing USR2 can damage the end of the old USR1. Back up USR1 first. FM1 Quest reads user sounds U01-U16 until you write over the saved data. Only version-1 sounds with an engine available here appear. Shared controls load based on the saved control count; missing controls use defaults. Other sounds stay hidden until their slots are replaced. • Groove OS: Possibly at risk: screen preferences, calibration and favourites; project 1; project 2; project 3; project 4; user sounds U01-U16; user sounds U17-U32; user sample USR1; user sample USR2; user sample USR3. The official route first puts V15 back, then installs Groove OS. Treat this firmware’s saved work as lost and back it up with its own tools before starting. Groove OS’s project saves, autosave, preferences, sample uploads and extra installed pages can also replace leftover work; nobody has published which parts of storage they use. A sound missing from PRESETS may still occupy storage, and do not count on Groove OS’s own backups to keep it.

Other firmwares reading Felucca [Salt]'s data: Felucca takes over Felucca [Salt]'s project 1; project 2; project 3; project 4, converting them (Playback uses this firmware’s instruments and control meanings. Saved music may sound different even if it opens); Felucca lists Felucca [Salt]'s user sounds U01-U16; user sounds U17-U32, but plays them differently (Salt’s DRAWBAR sounds use the instrument number this firmware uses for WHEEL, so they play as a different instrument. Saving also keeps the format changes made to the bank when it loaded); Felucca reads and uses Felucca [Salt]'s user sample USR1; user sample USR2; user sample USR3 (Only data in this sample slot is read. Other saved work is separate); Rainbow Mode takes over Felucca [Salt]'s project 1; project 2; project 3; project 4, converting them (Playback uses this firmware’s instruments and control meanings. SALT cannot open that saved copy. Synth parts play as DX7 sounds, with different engine and voice choices); sloopDX lists Felucca [Salt]'s user sounds U01-U16; user sounds U17-U32, but plays them differently (Only sounds in the first engine appear. They play as DX7 sounds. Other sounds stay hidden. Saving other slots keeps them); SLOOP DX7 Banks takes over Felucca [Salt]'s project 1; project 2; project 3; project 4, converting them (Once you save this section, its drum pattern and timing use the new format. Shared controls load based on the saved control count; missing controls use defaults. Other sounds stay hidden until their slots are replaced); FM1 Quest reads and uses Felucca [Salt]'s user sample USR1 (USR1 plays only if its audio and zones fit Quest’s 64 KiB slot. Sending into or erasing USR1 replaces it, including holding REC on a readable USR1 in IMPORTER. Sending into or erasing USR2 can damage the end of the old USR1. Extra slice markers are not used here); JIANT takes over Felucca [Salt]'s project 1; project 2; project 3; project 4; user sounds U01-U16; user sounds U17-U32, converting them (JIANT no longer has SAMPLE, GRAIN, SLICE or PHYS. Those sounds use its initial ANALOG sound, except old drum and percussion sounds, which become DRUM sounds. Imported names and patterns do not mean the original sample audio or sound is kept); ChoralRoot lists Felucca [Salt]'s user sounds U01-U16; user sounds U17-U32, but plays them differently (Imported sounds may sound different, even if their names are kept. Confirming Flash Data erases the older banks they came from); GHOULBOX takes over Felucca [Salt]'s project 1; project 2; project 3; project 4, converting them; GHOULBOX lists Felucca [Salt]'s user sounds U01-U16; user sounds U17-U32, but plays them differently; GHOULBOX reads and uses Felucca [Salt]'s user sample USR1; user sample USR2; user sample USR3; fm1-chord lists Felucca [Salt]'s project 1; project 2; project 3; project 4, but plays them differently (Loading a project does not promise identical sound. Chord presets also need their separately saved fm1-chord settings); fm1-chord takes over Felucca [Salt]'s user sounds U01-U16; user sounds U17-U32, converting them (Some sound engine numbers and controls mean different things, so a listed sound may play differently. The separate FM6 patches for those sounds are not recovered); fm1-chord reads and uses Felucca [Salt]'s user sample USR1; user sample USR2; user sample USR3 (Saved loop choices use ordinary looping. The ends of loops held by a gate signal can sound different. Key ranges, root notes, loop points and slice markers are not used); Jangada converts only older version 1 sounds in this group. Newer sound versions look empty, and saving anywhere in the group drops them from the rewritten group.. • Every way each write can happen, for all mapped firmwares: the flash atlas's table.

Salt keeps four projects, 32 user sounds, three user-sample slots, screen preferences, calibration and favourites in flash; an ordinary start opens a fresh empty working session, so load a project explicitly.

Unsaved music and parameter edits disappear at power-off; user sounds keep only steps 1–16 and the first note of each chord, with ties and flags but no velocities, while full patterns belong in projects.

Salt cannot load Felucca 1.6.1 projects; its later user sounds can look empty even when their bytes survive. Salt can import settings from Felucca 1.6.1, JIANT, GHOULBOX, Skiff, MAKU, Rainbow Mode, Hortator, WaveLoop FM-1 and PIGEON, and read the start of Melodee and ChoralRoot settings. After Salt saves preferences, returning to any of those firmwares can reset its whole settings record, including calibration, menu options and any favourites or MIDI LEARN kept there; an older surviving copy is not a reliable fallback. Rainbow Mode can also lose its saved WRITE song and greeting name, Hortator its remembered Bluetooth device, and Melodee its saved template and BOOT choice. ChoralRoot’s playing, MIDI and looper preferences can reset too. Back up with the firmware that made the work before switching in either direction. Salt’s project saves, user-sound saves, erases and sends to the FM-1, and USR1 sample uploads and erases can also replace ChoralRoot’s legacy sounds 1–32, VA patches, FM6 patches 1–32, CZ patches 1–32 and FM TONE patches, kept for returning to ChoralRoot 0.21 or older.

See the switching advice in this section for the affected saved work. The installer also scans saved-data sectors for update records and erases a sector if one matches. When Salt’s startup update check finds leftovers, it erases that whole update area without a question. Occupied data elsewhere in that area alone does not trigger the startup erase. Requesting an update from Salt clears the area even if the request is refused.

Closing MENU with missing or changed settings, changing favourite stars or the list filter, calibration, or sending editor preferences can write settings. See the switching advice in this section for the affected saved work. These settings writes have no separate overwrite question or undo. A cancelled startup calibration still reaches the settings-save check, which can write defaults when none loaded. Back up with the firmware that made the work before Salt’s first start.

See the switching advice in this section for the affected saved work. A user-sound save or erase rewrites its whole bank. The panel requires a second turn; an editor send can overwrite an unreadable slot without an overwrite question.

See the switching advice in this section for the affected saved work. The editor asks before its sample upload or erase, then writes immediately without undo. Being playable in Salt does not protect shared samples from replacement, and Salt ignores slice markers that other firmwares set later.

Back up with the firmware that made the work before switching in either direction. See the switching advice in this section. Other firmwares can overwrite Salt’s saved work at startup or automatically during use, before you press SAVE.

The community hub installer has its own erase policy; back up before installing through it.

Where the docs and the firmware disagree

No definite disagreement was found in the Salt docs read for this map. The browser Studio’s single-sound interface and its chord/sustain controls are separate from the FM-1 panel.

Scope and sources

Optional SLICE pages are excluded because that engine is disabled in the release-default configuration. Factory debug consoles and the browser-only interface are outside this panel map. No hardware behavior or interruption recovery was measured.

Mapped from ChanceTheMaker/Felucca at v0.9-salt14 (9490527, full commit 949052728758229ab5ab1816ccf9fa61fafc5803), 2026-10-17. An independent checker found zero errors in round 2 (2026-10-17). Evidence and exact release-source links for every entry are in [salt.json](salt.json); storage details and foreign-layout evidence are in salt.storage.json. Firmware code: GPL-3.0-only, with third-party licences listed in its LICENSING.md. This is an independent guide, not affiliated with M-VAVE or the firmware authors.
