A drone instrument where one note summons a cluster of voices above and below it that glide, like syrup, to each new root.

What quod does
- Quod is a drone instrument: one key sets the root and thirteen sine voices gather around it as angels above and demons below.
- The Heaven / Hell knob runs from a saturating drive, detuned deep voices and four high screamers to a vowel choir, a ringing church bell and climbing shimmer.
- Tilt slides the twelve voices along a ladder of twenty-four just intervals, and Spread scales every interval and widens the stereo image.
- Every voice is a mass on a spring, so Viscosity sets the glide from a fiftieth of a second to two minutes and Slosh sets the overshoot.
- Gate is a low-pass gate struck by every new root, resting shut for plucks or open for an untouched drone.
- Drift fades in each voice's twin, speeds their beating and scales the detune and wandering from pure to five semitones deep.
- The sixteen-step sequencer plays roots rather than notes, with step lengths from a bar to a sixteenth or WAIT until the drone settles, and REC records played keys.
- SAVE keeps the controls, steps, notes and locks, and state files travel over USB-MIDI between the FM-1, the browser, the Mac app and the plug-in.
Its modes
- Steps
- Turns the white keys into the sixteen sequencer steps so you can switch steps on or off, set each step's root and hold a step while turning a knob for a lock.
- Home
- Shows the cosmos, a spinning sphere where every voice circles as a point of light, white for an angel and red for a demon.
- FX
- Sets delay level, time and feedback, shimmer and drive on a page drawn as the tarot card XIV Temperance.
- SEL / SHIFT (held)
- Turns the knobs into tempo, step length, settled, delay and pattern length.
- Showcase
- Plays a 95-second tour through heaven, a new root, the spread, the tilt, hell and the drift, stopped by any key, button or knob.
