How to get the Casio CZ sound on the FM-1 with Melodee

Melodee, a custom firmware for the M-VAVE FM-1, has a CZ-1 engine: native Casio CZ-1 tones on a phase-distortion core, with Casio's 64 factory presets. Choose it in the sound browser, then shape its init sound on the Stage page, where KNOB1 picks the wave and KNOB2 is DCW, which brightens or darkens the tone.

The short answer

Switch to the CZ-1 engine, then shape it with DCW.

Before you start

These steps are for Melodee 1.4.1 on the M-VAVE FM-1. Start on the Stage page (HOME takes you there) and keep playing as you go: you hear each change on the notes you play.

Three steps

  1. Tap SAVE until the sound browser opens, turn KNOB4 to CZ-1, press OCT+.

    0:08
  2. KNOB1 now picks the wave. Turn it right. One of the waves, NULL, is silent.

    0:15
  3. KNOB2 is DCW. Turn it left to darken the tone. DCW sets the phase distortion.

    0:20

Pick a wave. Shape it with DCW.

Good to know

In the sound browser, KNOB4 changes the engine and starts it from its init sound; OCT+ keeps the sound and OCT- goes back to the one you had. The CZ-1's waves are SAW, SQUARE, PULSE, NULL, DBL SINE, SAW-PULS, MULTISIN and PULSE2. Les is independent and not affiliated with M-VAVE, Casio or Melodee's author.
